Auschwitz survivors have urged the world not to allow a repeat of the crimes of the Holocaust as they mark 70 years since the camp's liberation.

"We survivors do not want our past to be our children's future," Roman Kent, born in 1929, told a memorial gathering at the death camp's site in Poland.

Some 300 Auschwitz survivors returned for the ceremony under a giant tent.

Some 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, were killed there between 1940 and 1945, when Soviet troops liberated it.

Once again young Jewish boys are afraid to wear yarmulkes [skullcaps] on the streets of Paris, Budapest, London and even Berlin”

It is expected to be the last major anniversary event survivors are able to attend in considerable numbers.

Ronald S Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, told the commemoration: "Jews are targeted in Europe once again because they are Jews...

"Once again young Jewish boys are afraid to wear yarmulkes [skullcaps] on the streets of Paris, Budapest, London and even Berlin."

I was there last week it is an incredibly sad place knowing what happened there. Birkenau 2 miles down the road is worse because that is where they were railroaded in and straight into the gas chambers.

I've been to visit Auschwitz/Birkenau.
A couple of hours tour of the place and unlike nearly everything else I've ever done; I remember every second, every last detail.

Every single person who suffered here and at other camps and everywhere else they were terrorised and murdered has a story to tell. Most of these stories cover several years of hardship we cannot even begin to imagine.

None of it should ever be removed, knocked down or forgotten.

I went to Auschwitz , 2 years ago in Dec.
One starts taking photos, of the famous gate house
The early rooms visited .. Then we hit the pile of suitcases
With actual names chalked on by their owners, part of the
Smokescreen the Nazis played on the Jews.
Write your name on so you can find them later.
Then the room full of spectacles and teeth  and cut hair
The photos stopped as one gets overwhelmed by the enormity
Of the crime here.
I was outside , and the snow was there , the wind has a clear run
At the camp -- over the wide cleared area ( so any escapers could be
Clearly seen) -- and i thought of the under nourished, beaten, worn out
People standing in thin cotton striped pyjamas - many without shoes , standing
For hours on the parade ground in that snow in minus temperatures..
Fall down and you are marked for the gas chamber..
That was done by a whip across your face -- all so marked where taken away
From the parade ground head count next day .. And gassed or executed.
I could not go on .. I didn't reach the crematoria.. I sat for over an hour quietly
On my own on some steps away from the main areas -- and contemplated that place
And the enormity of the events that happened to men, women and children there ..
because of the roulette wheel luck of their being born into a Jewish family.
It could have been your parents"luck" ...
That very day by chance the school children of Israel visited the camp , i believe it
Happens twice a year.. They come in a large group -- protected by a ring of Israel
Security with clubs and some with side arms .. To protect their children --
As there are many out there today who would like to make a big point by
Killing Jewish children in Auschwitz... !!
and you wonder " What have we learned ? "...

I read a conspiracy that Himmler didnt committ suicide but was beaten savagely and killed by the British at a special house prepared for such things. When you see the scale and horror of what that man implemented then you can hope the story is true and that he suffered horribly for a long time.

When Julius Streicher ( the only Nazi to stick
To and quote his anti-Jewish beliefs throughout the Nuremburg Trial)
Was being executed by hanging ..
People there , said as he was being hanged , they could hear
Screaming for 15 minutes or so coming from the room where the execution
Was taking place ,-  and the continous splat noise of what sounded like clubs
Hitting a body over and over and over again.

Julius Streicher -- He was acquitted of crimes against peace, but found guilty of crimes against humanity, and sentenced to death on 1 October 1946. The judgment against him read, in part:

"... For his 25 years of speaking, writing and preaching hatred of the Jews, Streicher was widely known as 'Jew-Baiter Number One.' In his speeches and articles, week after week, month after month, he infected the German mind with the virus of anti-Semitism, and incited the German people to active persecution. ... Streicher's incitement to murder and extermination at the time when Jews in the East were being killed under the most horrible conditions clearly constitutes persecution on political and racial grounds in connection with war crimes, as defined by the Charter, and constitutes a crime against humanity.”[14]

During his trial, Streicher displayed for the last time the flair for courtroom theatrics that had made him famous in the 1920s. He answered questions from his own defence attorney with diatribes against Jews, the Allies, and the court itself, and was frequently silenced by the court officers. Streicher was largely shunned by all of the other Nuremberg defendants. He also peppered his testimony with references to passages of Jewish texts he had so often carefully selected and inserted into the pages of Der Stürmer.

Streicher was hanged in the early hours of 16 October 1946, along with the nine other condemned defendants from the first Nuremberg trial (Göring, Streicher's nemesis, committed suicide only hours earlier). Streicher's was the most melodramatic of the hangings carried out that night. At the bottom of the scaffold he cried out "Heil Hitler!". When he mounted the platform, he delivered his last sneering reference to Jewish scripture, snapping "Purim-Fest 1946!". The Jewish holiday Purim celebrates the escape by the Jews from extermination at the hands of Haman, an ancient Persian government official. At the end of the Purim story, Haman is hanged, as are his ten sons.[15] Streicher's final declaration before the hood went over his head was, "The Bolsheviks will hang you one day!" Joseph Kingsbury-Smith, who covered the executions,[16] said in his filed report that after the hood descended over Streicher's head, he also apparently said "Adele, meine liebe Frau!" ("Adele, my dear wife!").

The consensus among eyewitnesses was that Streicher's hanging did not proceed as planned, and that he did not receive the quick death from spinal severing typical of the other executions at Nuremberg. Kingsbury-Smith, who covered the executions for the International News Service, reported that Streicher "went down kicking" which may have dislodged the hangman's knot from its ideal position. Smith stated that Streicher could be heard groaning under the scaffold after he dropped through the trap-door, and that the executioner intervened under the gallows, which was screened by wood panels and a black curtain, to finish the job.[17] .
