Have been given antibiotics and told will need either root canal filling or tooth removed. Anyone know which is best couse of action. Is it possible abcess will heal with just antibiotics?
yes antibiotics should clear it up no problem. Best try and save it if you can as a tooth props its neighbors up, ie the teeth around it will become weaker. Be aware that root canal is pretty expensive though, so if you're on a budget whip it out.

I was in the same boat as you last year, after two courses of antibiotics it just wouldn't go away and it was causing me sleep problems and basically doing my head in. It was over the very back molar and I just had enough and had it ripped out, the pain pretty much instantly disappeared and having one less hampstead makes absolutely no difference whatsoever. If the first course doesn't shift it get rid is my advice.

ive had loads of work done over the yrs, got a small mouth so the teeth are crammed in which causes problems - have had root canal and would recommend it - have had a few out over yrs and spent £5k getting 3 implants over last 12 months to fill a couple of gaps - keep what youve got unless they're really problematic i suggest

I had a molar extracted a few days ago because even though an infection had cleared up after a week of antibiotics, a small hole in the side of the tooth made it very likely that it'd get infected again so I took the dentist's advice and had it whipped out.
When I looked at it afterwards, I was puzzled as I thought it looked like something could've been done to fill in the hole As I'd had a couple of numbing injections and I had a mound of cotton wool in my mouth, I couldn't be arsed having a conversation as what was done was done...especially with a Spanish geezer I found hard to understand.
I forgot to ask him why couldn't the tooth have been removed the week before when I was given the course of antibiotics for the infection? Is it true that getting a tooth out can be life-threatening if there's an infection?
