.....if so how did you amuse yourselves?

Just been looking through old photos and maybe these will give you a flavour for what I was doing.

Firstly the exhibition stand at Manchester, circa 1973.

Forgive one for talking about one's own achievements but, if you take out my company chairman and some poncey brewery tw@t who was paid for being just that,

everything else is me!!!

Looking back I have to wonder what all the other hangers on did!

I designed the stand, the logo, the lettering for which I was personally on site, and fitting at 07:00.

All of the visuals are mine together with plans which are not showing.

Consider , if you will, that some of the designs go back to 1968.

The designs were for the style requirements of the day, and client profile, and budget.

These photos are from tint 35mm prints and on a phone camera, hence shake and bad focus.

Another stand at the same exhibition that was a private commission...

...this was a three hour quicky just so a jumped up salesman had something to waffle on about.

This one is a real "cheapy" which is over the road from a Sheffield newspaper offices and a watering hole for the staff thereof.....

I have another thirty or so here, plus some on slides, and some more in my folio in the loft

Also, of interest, if you look at the stand, you may wonder what was going on behind the scenes!

This was the "Speak Easy" where clients were plied with drink, till they didn't know.......

Have to say they were interesting and rewarding times and it was nice to pick up a few private commissions such as "The Hoffmeister" box
at Doncaster and "Marries Bar" at "The Hotel St George", Harrogate.

How many brown pens did you get through per year?

How many brown pens did you get through per year?

I think the honest answer would be none.

I do tend to mix up the media somewhat but, for the most part, it is mainly "Gouache".

You have to remember that many of my designs are over forty years old, and targeting what was generally not the most sophisticated of clients.

What people don't get is the volume of thinking time that goes into some of these.

You don't just come to work, do the business and go home, where your only anguish is whether to get a "Doner" or "Shish Kebab"
or a Pizza.
Well you could do but you would never make it as a designer!

Also it pains somewhat, to have to meet the clients perceptions but "dull it down" to closer to where you want to be.

As it happens no, I don't, but I have a big bag of needles for some reason, in the loft.

Went to my first and last ever car boot sale a couple of years ago, watching gypsies, and assorted low life picking things up like the needles for £1.00
and then just walking off!!

I'll do them for 50p plus £15.95 postage to uk mainland only.

Did you design the old Mecca Bookmakers shops AP?
I remember the first ones were done in orange (I think the true name was burnt orange) and green walls with tan linoleum flooring and brown seating.

You beginning to wonder if it was worth it all?

At least Jimmy Saville didn't appear in any of your designs.  Maybe sneaking in on some of the less ordered margins ...?

I have fond memories of orange.
