What's your favourite supermarket bread?

MARVELLOUS STARCHED CRUSTY!

Usually make my own but occasionally buy Crosta & Mollica Pane Pugliese from Waitrose.
This is lovely crusty bread with a firm texture and makes excellent toast.

That sounds rather grand, Foinavon. Maybe I'll pop in Waitrose in Leeds and try it.

You won't regret it Kenny, not cheap but worth every penny. The other C&M products are delicious too.

I'm still feeding the cats by the way. The grey one is waiting for me by the door every morning and is growing on me. He is very affectionate has a distinctive meow that says he's hungry. He's also stopped hunting birds and this morning I saw a bullfinch pecking at rosebuds in the neighbour's garden.

Oh,the cats, well done. I'd forgotten about that as you do. How is the lady? She went in hospital if memory serves. Cats are fantastic, each with their own unique character.

She's still in hospital unfortunately. She's hopeful of returning home but won't be back soon as far as I can tell. The grey one misses her and runs into the kitchen as soon as the door is opened. Ginger is aloof and stays in his bed although he wanders over to his bowl once the food has been put out.

I see Foinavon, the main thing is that they're spayed and neutered. Worming, flea treatment and yearly injections help but as long as they're being fed and watered and have sleeping quarters they'll be happy. Well done young man.

I used to eat Tiger bread years ago aka'. A long white loaf with small slices if I remember correctly, back then.

Never been at all impressed with "Warburtons" and especially seeing that they are priced at the high end!

Just find them too lightweight for my taste but, on a recommendation here, will try their "Seeded Batch".

Hi Kenny, just seen your post.

She came out of hospital about a month ago but collapsed again earlier this week and was taken back to hospital. The ginger tom was taken to the vet, put on medication and kept in for observation but sadly had to be euthanised.
Doubt very much that she will be able to return home so am left looking after the cat again until her next of kin can arrange or agree a solution.
He's no trouble and I'll take care of him until he can be re-homed.

I would love to Kenny but can't have him in the house, Mrs F is genuinely allergic to cats. Next door will be sold eventually so he will have to go.

Well you could get him a nice warm kennel to sleep in, Foinavon and keep him outside perhaps. As long as he's fed and watered and has good shelter he should be happy I think. Very hard to get cats in a rescue centre, never mind re-homing them. Or maybe the next of kin has some plans for him.

It might come to that since cats are territorial. Is it legal to keep them outside year round though? Wouldn't want to be accused of animal cruelty or indeed cause any harm to an animal.

Been told today that as of monday all morrisons made instore 800g bread will be cut from £1.30 a loaf to 97p permanently.
Guess this will only interest anyone who buys it, but quite a big price cut.

Yes it's legal I'm pretty sure, Foinavon, as long as they have food, water and shelter. However on reflection, he might be better off going to a new owner who can mainly keep him indoors, as they're more prone to infections outside and many other perils.

What happened to Sunblest and Mother's Pride?

Mother's Pride is a brand name for a variety of breads produced by British Bakeries, a division of Premier Foods. The company also bakes Nimble (reduced calorie) and Hovis branded loaves as well as supermarket 'own brand' ranges.

British Bakeries was set up by Rank, Hovis, McDougall in 1955 to counter the then dominance of Allied Bakeries (Sunblest) and ensure an outlet for their flour products. Mother's Pride, which had been sold in the North since at least 1936 (an advert appears for Mother's Pride bread produced by W J Brookes & Sons, Bakers, Old Trafford, Manchester 16 in the 1935 "A Hundred Years of Road Passenger Transport in Manchester", published by Manchester Corporation Transport in that year [1]), was marketed as a national brand by the new division in 1956. For a time in the 70s and 80s, it was the best selling white bread in the UK.

The 1960s advertising jingle was: "Mother's Pride's a family, A family of bread". One well-known advertisement featured singer Dusty Springfield singing a jingle called "Knocker-Upper" (which, in the UK, refers to someone who wakes up other people). This is featured on the "Dusty: Full Circle" documentary from 1994.

Anyone seen that bread you can get with pork bits in it, really cheap it is.  God knows what conditions the pigs are kept in.

What about the poor little yeasts?  They are animals too.  Mother's Pride are notorious for being among the worst in the industry for the atrocious conditions they keep the poor little mites in.  Vegetarian's that eat bread are worse than hitler imo.

I kill trillions of the little blighters every time I bake bread. They've had a good life though as they had a free range existence during the previous 2 hours with plenty of food and warmth.
Could use baking powder instead of yeast but it doesn't taste anywhere like as nice.

Iceland are doing a frozen, cook at home section in their stores. Tried a Corn Bread tonight which was quite delicious.

I've switched from thick to medium sliced bread on the theory it'll be less calories per sandwich, so I can fit into my favourite mankini this summer.

I like the batch/farmhouse/seeded breads.
Thinking about it, I can't really remember seeing thin sliced bread, maybe I just don't look hard enough?
