got an interview with Redrow homes, first interview since leaving uni (mature student). I have to take a product from home and sell it. Can someone pitch me something I could use.

This is the best place to ask right?

I worked in sales and recruitment of sales people.

The most important thing to remember is that sales is mostly bull**** people.  Any interview that they want you to sell an object to them means they aren't allowed to use their own judgement and are interviewing by numbers, which is the way with larger companies.

Just choose a mundane object like a pen. Do it as a Features and Benefits F&B.

e.g:

F) It's functional......does what it says on the tin, reliable - slow flow ink B) meaning it lasts longer.

F) This model has comes in an array of colours; B) Something to suit everyone's tastes

F) It's lightweight; B) Can take it anywhere

F) Competitively priced; B) represents a real value for money purchase.

etc.

End with: Do you have any questions about this product I can help you with? When they say no, simply ask. Are you happy to proceed with the purchase now?

I used to recruit financial advisers as a sales manager. Avoid the long rambling speeches. Keep it short and succinct.

Good luck.

Thanks Wesdag I will. And if true T&C I won't do so well Id perform better one on one or one on two (I have experience in both:-) )

I work for a large company at present and sat in on interviews with my manager and he was just looking to tick boxes which favours the extroverts which Im not but considered the best where I work hence sitting in on interviews with view of progressing with them, which is not what I want.

I'd take a snowball in with me and tell them it's the  only one you have left, because you bumped into a few Eskimo's on your way here and ended up selling them all to them!

Take a product like a microwave oven in, or anything.

Then ask them why do they want a microwave?

Get them to generate the "demand" for the product.

Then list all the great features that matches their requests and what they want from a microwave.

"Does this sound like something you might be interested in? It matches everything you need"

When they say yes. (you can even ask what it is they like about the particular microwave. Effectively they are selling it to themselves)

Say well I have some good news for you today as this particular microwave is on special offer today.

Jobs a good un.

What you do is take something that you don't need and can sell by offering a ridiculously low price, and basically sell it to them like you were selling it in the street, what you have to do is make the give you ANYTHING for it, then in theory no matter what you get off them you have SOLD it ...

Some good ideas, but also remember you're selling yourself. The selling the item to them will be a small part of the interview, make them want you for your other abilities.
Good Luck

Sell me this pen

“It’s sort of a trick question. Because when you say to a salesman, ‘Sell me this pen,’ you might find some will say to you, ‘This is a great pen, this pen writes upside down. It defies gravity, this pen is the cheapest pen on earth, this pen will never run out.’ They’ll say all the reasons the pen is good, they’ll start telling you the features, and the better ones will give you the benefits too. But that’s not what the real answer is.

“The real answer is, before I’m even going to sell a pen to anybody, I need to know about the person, I want to know what their needs are, what kind of pens do they use, do they use a pen? How often do they use a pen? Do they like to use a pen formally, to sign things, or use it in their everyday life? The first idea is that when you say ‘Sell me this pen,’ I want to hear [the salesman] ask me a question. ‘So tell me, how long have you been in the market for a pen?’ I want them to turn it around on me and start asking me questions to identify my needs, what I’m looking for. And if you do that, people don’t know what to do. Next thing, he is answering, and now I’m controlling the conversation, finding out exactly what he needs.

“Once I have that, I say, ‘You know, Bill, based on what you’ve just said to me, the pen I have here is the perfect fit. Let me tell you what it’s about…’ Then you can tell them about what you have, because you’re filling a need. Most average or newbie salespeople think that they’re supposed to sell you the pen, when a really seasoned salesperson will actually turn it into a qualifying session to find out what you need. That’s the truth of it. It’s like trying to sell someone a house and you don’t know if they’re in the market for a house, what kind of house they want, how many kids – so how can you sell someone a house? That’s the point.”

I will char well its not till the end of the month. I m still toying with asking them 1st what they expect from the product I take then I can tailor it to their needs. Rather than just telling them the features of something they may not want. Or, if you can deliver a good pitch regardless. As pointed out a good salesman gathers the customer requirements from a product then it is suitable. Im going round in circles with it Crazy
