He says if you insult his mother he will punch you. I thought Christianity was about turning the other cheek? Shouldn't Francis resign as pope if he resorts to this action?
I think that outburst should serve to remind many of you just how defensive many people can be of their religion. Islam sees ridicule or images of Mohammed as blasphemy and cannot be allowed to go unpunished. A bit extreme...but not unique.
Before the expected torrent of abuse let me point out that I have no interest in ANY religion.

If freedom of speech is to be held up, then frankly he should be ignored. There's no point having the double standard of saying HIS opinion should matter more because his particular brand of it has more of a history here, that defeats the entire argument. There's a principle here.

Tomorrow, a Saudi blogger will be viciously flogged 50 times in the second of 20 such weekly punishment sessions he will receive this year. Raif Badawi’s crime? Suggesting reforms for Islam. A more compelling, sickening example of the suppression of free speech it would be hard to find. Yet, just as I was about to pen an outraged column attacking the Saudi regime for such an inhuman, outrageous act, my attention was diverted to something equally troubling a little closer to my own spiritual home. Today, the Pope, leader of the Catholic Church - of which I am a member - endorsed violence as a way to respond to insults
Is he right to take that jump? I doubt the Pope had thought that one through properly.

i thought it was fairly clear from the clip i saw, he said if you insult someone's mother they may naturally punch you out of anger, he then went on to say violence was never the solution. from what i gather his point was insults are counter productive, though he doesn't mention justified criticism, possibly implying a distinction between the two.

Yeah, fair point, but he really seems to be head and shoulders above the rest. Every other pope I've considered to be a complete twát, tbh, but this guy is driving around in a shít car, calling up random people to give them popely advice, being sensible about gays, atheism, priestly celibacy...
I mean, given his position, I don't really see what more he could do. He could hardly turn up to Mass smoking a spliff, with a bikini model on either arm, and tell everybody to skip the hymns, go home and party.

He's certainly different. Gave all the cardinals the proverbial kick up the erse with his NY speech. Too many cliques and too much gossiping he told them.

Yes true. He does seem ok for the most part. The trouble with something like the vatican though is they could easily take a backward step once he gets er promoted
