I've got all his albums. I thought he'd lost the plot forever with the execrable 'Modern Guilt', but yes "Morning Phase' is indeed superb.

Saw this thread and came on to say how great his latest album was....... but that's the general consensus already

I've always liked what I'd heard of Beck, I keep meaning to get his stuff, then forget and never do
.There's an advert on at the moment that's a Beck song, I immediately recognised the style and it reminded me, so this time I made a note in my to get list to get some Beck. So skip Modern Guilt, I'll note that. |

Here's a PERSONAL selection of some favourite Beck tracks, one taken from each of his proper studio albums from his 1994 'breakthrough' album onwards.
"Truckdrivin Neighbors Downstairs (Yellow Sweat)" from MELLOW GOLD (1994) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fWXvB_lDlo "Lord Only Knows" from ODELAY (1996) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rju7icQD9xg "We Live Again" from MUTATIONS (1998) - his BEST album - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFfAic-wsw8 "Pressure Zone' from MIDNITE VULTURES (1999) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb2_j6FKqxI 'Sunday Sun" from SEA CHANGE (2002) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0KjMK0F6b8 "Girl" from GUERO (2005) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkCg-3nxT8E "Soldier Jane" from THE INFORMATION (2007) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCqaNlpcXLU No tracks whatsoever from the completely disposable MODERN GUILT (2008) The 'SONG READER' project (2010) was a set of songs presented in the form of Sheet Music only, to enable listeners to perform their own versions. 'Blackbird Chain' from MORNING PHASE (2014) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKW_WTzSJy8 Best albums 1, MUTATIONS 2. MIDNITE VULTURES Best cover version of a Beck Hansen song? Try "Feel Good Time" by PINK (2003) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNJqTVnZsCU Thank me later |

Thanks Alan, I've saved that. If you'd recommend say 2/3 albums, which would you go for?
|
|
By:
alun ,you have almost identical taste to me fella - almost every one of those tracks would be on my top listing - Mutations and Vultures my fave 2 albums
Truckdrivin Neighbors Downstairs btw is a feckin all time classic glad someone else knows about that tune |

As above,
1. MUTATIONS (an unstoppable collection of generally quiet and introspective songs, and 'not a party record' to quote the man himself) 2. MIDNITE VULTURES (in which he decides he and his band are Prince and The Revolution !) 3. MORNNG PHASE (a return to form that I had not anticipated, so I'm putting this above a few) 4. ODELAY but they all generally have something really good to offer (except Modern Guilt) Best thing is you can check them out FREE on YouTube as the 'full album' versions are usually out there. |

Ok, thanks.

Nice to hear that Coachbuster.
Here's a little known (and equally hilarious and irreverent) Beck track which delights in the title of 'MTV Makes We Wanna Smoke Cr@ck' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJTKf01swJY |

First heard Beck one night on the radio back in the early 90s. Played Odelay to death in the car. Sort of stopped listening after Midnight Vultures, wasn't bad but Debra was the only track I really liked.
But with His last album, Morning Phase, is just majestic written above, I'll have to check that out with that recommendation. |

Nearly 50,000 retweets of this succinct post from a (black) NY producer, yesterday
Kanye West told a n***a who plays like 14 instruments that he needs to respect the artistry of a woman who needs 4 writers for one song |

I think a group hug for Beck is in order

I too have all his albums...think he's great. Listened to Morning Phase last night for the first time in ages and it is indeed a cracker. Want to see him live for sure. A mate of mine who isn't a fan saw him somewhere at a festival and it was pissing down with rain, everyone was a bit down but he said Beck came on just playing a mouth organ to start off with and got the crowd right up. Very talented bloke.
