Is atheism a religion?

I don't think its a religion, in fact I think they  would be offended being associated with the word Religion. What you don't understand is that many atheists merely belong to these groups or factions , whatever u want to call them is so that their beliefs or non beliefs are too considered when it comes to daily life.

The fact remains these people are not comfortable lying about the fact that  they dont believe in a higher being (God) but the fact remains even in this modern world, if ones comes clean and says the are atheist they are looked at in a different way, esp in positions of power such a politics/judicial system in particular, these are just facts, why should this be? Do some research for yourself, being part of a church appears to be a pre requisite in many areas of life and believing or not can actually have a significant impact on your life whether u realise it or not.

Anyway just trying to show some reasons why these people might want to bring awareness to this.

I dont believe in God nor do I get involved in any 'Atheist' activity but I can see their point having done a lot of research on it purely from a curiosity standpoint. I think religion is facinating, and I love churches, I just dont believe in a higher being of that fact that people dont actively have an equal chance to make up their own minds in most cases, (ie religions is usually thrust on u by your parents without your choice and u are just told youre a catholic, Muslim etc ). I also dont like the fact that we are apparently born sinners and flawed and must repent for our sins, doesnt make sense, our moral compass should come from ourselves  not from a higher being because if we allow that to happen then our minds are not our own in the first place and if we only do good things because God tells us too then whats the point? Having said all that the 10 commandments arent a bad thing and it isnt a bad guide to live your life by but all humans should live by the golden rule, dont do to anyone that u would not like done to yourself. The thing is many religious people believe that if there was no religion the world would just turn to chaos and everyone would run around killing, and stealing etc etc , which simply isnt true, we would still behave like humans for the most part and certain people would still kill and steal etc just like they  do.

I prefer to side with science on this one along with the fact that i have just seen so much sh!t happen in the name of religion which im sure u are aware of, in particular in recent days. I dont wish to convince  people that there is no God, these are simply my views.

I would not raise my children telling them there is no God, they can make that decision for themselves, im not too hardcore eitherway but i know what i believe and i think it should be acceptable that this is recognised and most of all accepted, not as a religion but as an acceptable view.

I find the whole thing fascinating and really enjoy the debate, theres millions on youtube, its just a v interesting topic.

Of course atheism is not a religion, it is not a belief. To call oneself a ´devout´ atheist is being ironic.

If you don't  understand the importance of people railing against the religious establishment, then you probably haven't thought how invasive religion is in our society.  Maybe if you are religious, you don't want change.  Maybe you are happy to live in a society governed from the very top, and throughout, on the basis of dark age superstitions.  Don't expect any progress to come from 'the top'.

Strange that very few MPs come out as not believing in God?  I think they have a prayer every morning in the Houses of Parliament.  Have we ever had an atheist PM?  Don't think so!
Tried getting your child into a decent local school?  Round here they are all C of E so the kids get brainwashed from the age of 5.  Or would you rather send your kids to a Muslim school?!  That seems to be a good breeding ground, doesn't it?  Getting religion out of education should be one of the most important jobs for a government.  Didn't we learn anything from Northern Ireland about schooling and religions?  Aren't you fed up with unelected religious people appearing on the television in the wake of some natural disaster or killing.  They are there to comfort their 'flock' (just realised!! that that makes the people 'sheep' - how ironic.) and they are 'comforting' them from an 'act of god'.  Irony to power a million.

Religion is the elephant in the room.  With all the current Muslim issues maybe now is a good time to start talking in a sensible way about religion.  But I doubt it.
