Anybody tried making proper non-pasteurized Sauerkraut? There are some impressive lectures on the Internet, about the digestive system and fermented foods. Sure now, this Irish lad is impressed already, to be sure.

Do you know, Vel, I LOVE cabbage and after having a 'hospital incident' about 18 months ago, was feasting on great platefuls of the stuff to boost my iron levels - only to find that my stomach (as it was sorely depleted with normality at the time) just couldn't digest it at all.
I won't go into details - but it was, well, quite horrendous!

I looked up on the internet what the problem might be and found that cabbage is broken down by a specific enzyme in the gut which doesn't relate to any other veg.

So, how about that then?!

But, Tommy, wouldn't the FERMENT Plain change the cabbage anyway? Much as milk is transformed into yogurt? I prefer yoghurt myself. Who gave the order to change the spelling...Angry

Yes, I do like corn beef hash with some nice raw onions.

Ah, that's a good point, Vel - about the fermentation.

Mind you, I don't know if that's a good or bad thing for the gut?

I LOVE cucumber and raw onion soaked in malt vinegar for a few hours before I put it on tinned salmon sandwiches.

It really is 'Ambrosia'.

But, by heck, it always catches up with me - in a not very pleasant way!

Some top lectures on YouTube, Tommy - just veg and salt - then fermentation...people reporting all kinds of cures and health benefits. Have heard good things about apple cider vinegar too.

If you 're into fermented food try kefir, and make your own probiotic yoghurt. Once you've got the grains they last for ever. All you need to buy is the milk and if you cant tolerate milk there is a water variety.
I suggest you google kefir as there is lots about it on the net.

Ta, Bix -- I fancy giving that a go...anyway, Tommy...this is what happened...regarding The Orange Inquiry...

The Orange Inquiry.

My neighbour, Darren "Cheddary T" McGregor was on a high, thanks to the publication of his debut Sci-Fi novel, THE PLARKOTEX INHERITANCE. One day, while visiting the local Tesco store, he felt generous as he handed a £20 note to the Romanian gypsy girl selling The Big Issue. Funnily enough, that month's magazine contained a very positive review of THE PLARKOTEX INHERITANCE. Darren had already turned down an offer to sell the film rights, a bid believed to be in the region of six figures, tendered by a Motherwell-born billionaire, with wealth off the radar. So, quite frankly, twenty quid was feck all to "Cheddary T."

Anyway - Darren noticed that The Big Issue vendor had a bag of the most lovely oranges he had ever seen - big round feckers - absolutely MASSIVE ; bigger than grapefruits they were.

"Can I have an orange?" asked Darren.

"No, sir...I am afraid not," replied the girl.

Darren was a bit miffed - perhaps even peeved and scunnered - as he had just handed this girl a nice crisp twenty pound note :

"OK," he said, "I'm gonna ask you one more time, doll...and if you don't give me a feckin' orange, I want my £20 note back...!"

If you're into fermented stuff try surstromming. Fermented herring banned by most airlines because of the possiblity of the can exploding or the smell which would put the plane out of action for days. Usually opened out of doors. See youtube.

Bix - I've tried that or something very much like it...can still taste it to this day, with minimal recall...girl from Iceland brought some over for her flat-mates to try. "Pungent" to say the least...sort of raw herring or mackerel in broon slime...

Tommy, I wasn't telling the whole truth there, as I quite literally ran into Darren "Cheddary T" McGregor at the Killie V Celtic match a few days ago...you see, Darren works as a ball-boy to supplement his income as a top top Sci-Fi writer...and I am a part-time PO-LICE, as they say in THE WIRE. When the ball ran out of play, Darren told me - as he handed me a Mitre Delta V12 Fluo Hyper-resistance football featuring ORANGE flashes - that he was only detained in the cells for 24 hours.

However - these are the further and better particulars of the case as told to me by CHEDDARY T himself :

Actually, I should just explain to you before I begin the story - proper, like - the origin of that CHEDDARY T nickname.

There was a lot of fuss in the sporting press recently about the ex-Fulham manager Felix Magath and his propensity for treating football injuries with CHEESE -- well, Darren McGregor has been treating his own aches and injuries for years with a mixture of English Vintage CHEDDAR and Earl Grey TEA. Hence, that bizzare CHEDDARY T monicker.

Now, regarding that Gypsy lass and her bountiful ORANGES...at last it can be told...

Stoke are playing the Arse, away, tomorrow at 1:30pm, Vel.
Should be a tasty match.

I know Stoke have never won there since they've been promoted but I rather fancy them getting a point or 3 tomorrow.
Probably wishful thinking but we'll see.

Darren McGregor returned the next day to see the Gypsy girl with the same bag of oranges. The oranges were in an orange carrier bag.

"Two hundred quid!" shouted Darren - "I'll give you two hundred quid for those oranges!" and he flopped oot a squaad o' tenners onto the Lotto stand next to the girl.

Some of the other shoppers in the arcade were spooked by Darren's erratic behaviour and loud voice.

"Does that include the barg?" she enquired.

"The barg? You mean the BAG..." said Darren, scratching his napper.

"You mean the BAG..." repeated Darren, again, somewhat pointlessly, scratching his napper...again and again and again and again...for you see, Darren was also here to buy SELSUN SHAMPOO as his dandruff was getting out of hand. (Note to Moderator : This is not spam - it is essential to the story. Thank you.) Before he sold his Sci-Fi novel, Darren would habitually buy the store's own brand name shampoo, but now he was ready for a proper anti-dandruff shampoo upgrade, and it could be NONE BUT SELSUN - YOU KNOW IT WORKS FOR THE KARDASHIANS SO WHY SHOULDN'T IT WORK FOR YOU? SELSUN! THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES EVEN IF YOU'RE JUST A SINGLE PARENT.

"Well I cannot sell them...to you..." said the Gypsy girl with a hint of arrogance in her voice.

It sort of sounded like she said TOE YO with a weird upward inflection, like she was Japanese or summat. Darren was becoming increasingly agitated and eventually he shouted "WHAT'S YOUR NAME? WHAT'S YOUR NAME? TELL ME YOUR NAME!!" like he was DO WAH on the rampage.

Without hesitation she replied :

"This might take a wheel (sic)...butt (sic)...all you need to know at the moment is that my present name is Shw00qrr Shant00ly, Keeper of the Oranges."

I have a terrible yearning for some pickled onions now.

Think I'll have to indulge in half a jar or so.
