Had a leak under the Sink, one of the joints had worked loose. Was difficult to re-assemble as there are three joints from the Sink Bottom to the waste pipe. In fact still have a slight dribble leak but don't want to disassemble the whole lot again so left a bucket underneath.

My question is that wouldn't it be so much easier if just a flexible hose from the sink bottom to the waste pipe and just a connection at each end?

Surely plastics these days are flexible enough to allow such?

2 reasons straight off, 1,
you need a U bend to provide a water barrier to prevent smells coming back int the kitchen, bathroom etc, secondly waste flex of 40ml plus would need to concertina for strength and flexibility purposes, providing trapping areas for bits of food etc to begin to build up, eventually causing a blockage. the smoother the piping for waste the better.

You don't want a bender near your waste pipe that's for sure.Shocked

i have never understood why some plumbers use solvent weld when the push fit system works just as well

Push system fittings tend to want to point wherever it suits them. Welded pipes stay where you tell 'em.

Apart from that...the O-ring seal is designed to work under pressure(dynamic). It doesn't work well at ambient pressure.
