many people kept a small paraffin heater under the old models but I'm lost with the new technology so I don't know if it would still work

a few ideas

turn the starting handle more times than the manual tells you
recalibrate spark plugs
bump start on a hill

theyre usually very reliable starters, but if its an older car it may have a plug heater lighter on the dash,if it has then switch on the ignition for a minute without starting engine then start engine when light goes out

Some old diesel engine vehicles have a built in 'pre-igniton' heater.

Try turning the ignition key the opposite way to 'start' and hold it there for 30 seconds.

Then try to start it.

Diesels always start whatever the weather, like someone said its the glow plugs. they preheat the engine.

I have had my VW Golf GT PDI from new and it has done 165k miles and is nearly 13 years old. Has started first time, every time no matter the weather.

Absolutely bomb proof engine.

I know nothing about my diesel car, but it says in the manual to turn the key, wait for the light on the dash to go out, then turn the key to start.  Something about giving the glow things time to warm the thing.  And press the clutch pedal to the floor when starting.
