I want to buy some of bottles of alcohol such as wine, brandy, whiskey that I can put away for 20-30 years and will be in as drinkable condition if not better in 30 years time than it would be today.

Any suggestions?

Was looking through my drinks cabinet tonight looking for a bottle of red to open and found a couple of bottles of 2001 Rioja at the back. How long does a bottle of wine like this keep. I mean will it get better as it gets older but then reach a point where it starts to deteriorate?

Can't help you with the 30 years question, I daren't plan one year ahead.SadLaugh. I spent 3 months in Spain last year, and got very fond of ( a recommended) Rioja, I was very wary because it was 3.75 Euros in the supermarket, it was Faustino V11 and it was fine, in the duty free  I bought the best Faustino 24 Euros Faustino 1. Imagine my disappointment at seeing the 24 Euro bottle at £12.99 in Asda (now £13.99) and the 3.75 bottle at £7.99 in the same store.

I thought you had to store booze in wooden casks, as it just stays the same in a glass bottle?

Dav, I'm a sucker for single malts over 20 years old, unfortunately my pocket no longer agrees.

I am sure I have a some bottles of 15 year old single malt. Does it actually state the year on whiskey bottles because I must have these bottles over ten years now so not sure how old they are now. Does a new bottle of 15 year old single malt get better over time in the bottle?

Sadly not paddle. A ten yr old malt tastes the same whether its 10 yrs or 100 yrs old. Red wine matures with age but not whisky.

paddletoe, Mr Eboue is correct with whiskey it's the time before bottling that counts. HNY everybody. Time for bed.

Find your favourites and then contact the manufacturer. Many distilleries, cognac houses etc. have good deals available, some of which are never sold to the general public. Around the millenium I bought a supply of Bushmills which was a limited edition, cask strength, straight from the distillery.HappyYou could combine a holiday to Europe when you locate your favourite wine, visit the vineyard, stock up and save enough to pay for your trip.GL

Why have you not considered Port for laying down purposes? I bought a bottle of Dows 63 Vintage in the early 80's for about a tenner. I could sell it now for £150, but I'm waiting for a special occasion to crack it open with friends.
