Brilliant musician. HB Jeff.

I identified him as a future star when he was in the Idle Race!
Report anubis7 December 30, 2014 9:26 PM GMT
Indeed. The best singer/songwriter/producer that has ever lived. Happy
Report Burton-Brewers December 30, 2014 9:29 PM GMT
I'd love to read an autobiography, I think Bev Bevan did one but fairly sure Jeff hasn't
Report anubis7 December 30, 2014 9:35 PM GMT
Yes Bev Bevan did a book in the 80s. I don't think Jeff is ever likely to do one.
Report Slicer December 30, 2014 9:36 PM GMT
His work with the Wilburing Travelburys was very good too!

First concert I ever saw was ELO 1979 I think, brilliant
Report Clungehungry January 6, 2015 12:06 AM GMT
Tremendous musician. I bought every ELO album, both Wilburies and his solo album. Class stands the test of time. There was an episode of Doctor Who pretty much based around Mr Blue Sky a couple of years ago. An understated legend.

I am very envious of dambuster
Report dambuster January 6, 2015 9:59 AM GMT
The stage was pitch black, then The had a ufo land, a little robot came out and said,
"Just off the border of your waking mind, there lies another time where darkness and light" etc etc etc,
Then Richard Tandy played the first few chords of twilight, and the stage burst into light as they sang " twilight"... Love
Report Tommy Toes January 6, 2015 3:04 PM GMT
That must be a great memory, dambuster.

Is it true Jeff have a little dalliance with Queenie Watts which he wrote about in 'Sweet Talking Woman'?
Report dambuster January 6, 2015 3:21 PM GMT
No, LaughLaughLaugh[  are you insane...???..

It was Bella Emberg

I'd like to have seen ELO, on stage in Queenies pub, that would have been a tight fit
Report Tommy Toes January 6, 2015 10:58 PM GMT
It would have been, Dambuster, but I'm sure she'd have squeezed 'em in somehow!

Here she is in full throttle in her pub - and gives away her secret near the end of the clip of how she ended up married so many times - by singing to her 'intendeds'!

Tommy and friends,

The Great Woman sang in most of the London pubs that have now sadly shut down, and at least while she was courting Wilfred Hyde-White she also reportedly did a stripping gig in most of them as well.

You couldn't hope to see entertainment in London like that these days. I know a lot of people swear by Ronnie Scott's place, but for my money Queenie backed by Oscar Petersen on piano,  Tommy Ramone on drums, Wilfred Hyde-White on upright bass and General de Gaulle on accordion, all under the merciless and fastidious zeal of crazed drink-driving zealot bandleader Jack Parnell is one of the finest memories I have of being in Newham.
Report Tommy Toes January 7, 2015 1:08 AM GMT
hahahaha! Brillient, Alun!
Report alun2005 January 7, 2015 1:29 AM GMT
Ah it was a magical night of music.

It even beats the night I drove down from Chester in my armour-plated Bentley to tickle the ivories in a tough Newham roughhouse pub,  which actually turned out to be in Genteel Chichester instead.

Undeterred, I fearlessly continued on to Newham for a world-class curry in an Indian Restaurant, although that actually turned out to be in Barking. Still, you can't be too careful, and at the end of the evening I was glad to be escorted back to the securely-parked Bentley by 4 of private bouncer staff.

Little wonder I feel safer in Africa these days.

Sir Ken Morrison was a dab hand on the banjo. T'old lass next door knew him when he was knee high and told me. He'd have fitted in well alun.

excellent tales from the past.

Those were the days and no mistake, when Wilfred Hyde-White and Jack Parnell ruled Newham with a rod of iron.

Tremendous documentary about him - a couple of months ago - on BBC4

Aired shortly after the ELO Hyde Park revival show.

Came across as a really humble and level-headed man.

No doubt it will be shown again, in a few months - as these kind of features tend to get repeated, on 'a loop' basic, by the BBC.
Report fife January 7, 2015 4:58 PM GMT
Talented yes not sure about humble as he re recorded Mr Blue Sky by playing all the instruments himself on the album as he was not happy with the original recording with the rest of the band.
Report anubis7 December 30, 2016 4:34 PM GMT
69 today. Happy Birthday. A great year with the best of ELO getting to no.1 in the album chart and Jeff Lynne's ELO winning the Band of the Year award at the Classic Rock awards.

Meanwhile, the original ELO will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame next April. I will be interested to see how many of the former members turn up. They have to perform three songs.
