If a Ltd company started trading on the 1st Jan 2014 , when would the 1st amount of tax be payable.

Corporation Tax? Assuming your year is to end Dec2014, then it is 9 months to pay - and I think around 6 months to file your return

You are legally obliged to inform HMRC that your new limited company has been formed as soon as you have completed the incorporation process.

you then appoint an accountant, who will complete the returns for you.

The fact that you have asked this question on a gambling forum (and not an accountant)suggests that this is not something to attempt yourself.

That question should have been asked before starting the company. Will you have a high monetary turnover that requires VAT registration, if so you should have been collecting VAT from day one, by issuing invoices declaring VAT number to follow. In the start up process VAT is your best friend, in recovering start up costs.
