Sometimes you get people in front who feck around to an extreme degree.   Also it blows my mind when having to wait an inordinate (and its inordinate if the shop has multiple tills not open and you can clearly see members of staff standing around/not doing very much) amount of time to hand my money over

something 'not very important' for me includes shelf-filling : they actually think that comes before accepting my money ? no way Jose - what they've done there is to calculate that once you've taken the trouble to do your shopping, you're not going to give up that investment of time if they slow down you're exit process by deploying their manpower elsewhere.         Big mistake MrSupermarket clever-clogs : you cannot play me like that.

Shelf-stackers aren't necessarily trained on tills. Time was waiting 15 minutes at checkouts was standars, lot quicker today. People 'standing around' might be supervising self-scan. Typically abandoned shopping is by people hoping to nick stuff, and using a 'normal' shop as a decoy. Most annoying are the dumped fresh items - unsellable thereafter.

So do you go without or go through the same process in another store?

i go back later if i really need the stuff (shops within walking distance) - i've never abandoned a trolleyful either, as i'm only ever buying an armful of stuff, not even a basketful

yes cmt, we get a night-premium of course. The basic is so low (£7.02 ph) that the only way to make it pay is by doing nights. The saturday night/sunday morning shift returns about £12 ph due to the weekend being factored in for some added pay.  Almost a living wage - if every night paid that well I wouldn't need tax-credit money.

but then, thats the whole giant scam the 'business community' has perpetrated on this country right there - pay people fck all, and get the govt( i.e. taxpayer) to pick up the tab for those employees with families who couldn't possibly support themselves on the wages alone.

£7.02 is poor money these days.

I worked for Scottish Courage in Dagenham (Essex) 10 years ago, and the basic rate for a warehouseman was £7-00 back then. £7-25 for a warehouseman with a reach truck or fork lift licence. £7--50p if he had both.

From 6-00 p.m. on Friday to 6-00 a.m. on Monday was all double time.

Bank Holidays were double pay and a day off in lieu.

Anything over 8 hours from 6-00 a.m. Monday to 6-00 p.m Friday was paid at time and a half, unless you did more than a 12 hour shift, then it went up to double pay.

Team Leaders were on £8 plus overtime, but had to hold both licences.

FLM's (Front Line Managers) were on staff, not the clock, and on £32k p.a. basic, AND they got paid overtime. 

There were so many warehouses down south that if firms didn't pay the right amount, they got no staff, or they got complete idiots.

Scandalous that firms won't pay a proper wage and the govt have to pick up the tab. No working man should have to claim any benefits or tax credits at all.

CMAT I work in the midlands in warehousing, its called Logistics now. I worked as a shift manager with 2 FLM and 2 Team Leaders and 45 staff  reporting to me for 32k almost 8 years ago. The company had 3 initials the 1st a " D" the third a "L".
I am in the same game at a different company and have just stepped down from a Management role to a Supervisors role. As a manager I was salaried no overtime and had to re apply for my own job every 18 months, only this year I didn't I applied for a supervisors job.
I got the supervisors job which meant I was £18 a week worse off than when I was a manager, but I now get paid overtime. Overtime at the end of my shift which falls into nightshift rates is £28.70,i manage to do 5 hours a week. Just to help the company out, so they can supply their customers.
