This is going to sound terrible but I wish these adverts weren't allowed on telly, or at least not so many of them. They really depress me. I give as much as I can afford, which is only £240 a year, but it's got to the point where I can hardly bare to watch the commercial channels anymore because the sight of starving kids upsets me too much.

I bet most of it go's in admin fees. A lot of people making a killing. There are a lot of good causes but there's also a lot of charity's where people are making a nice living out of. Here in Ireland one charity head was on 200 thousand euro a year.

It seems like most adverts are charity ones on certain channels. Do you think they get them aired cheaply, or is it just a case that they make so much money that they can afford to advertise almost constantly?

The other thing I forgot to mention is that since I took out my modest direct debit donations I have become inundated with letters and phone calls from other charities. Honestly, it is really depressing me as they all seem so deserving. It sounds terrible I know, but it's getting me down.

a lot of adverts may be aimed at retired folk - i can't be certain .
if you reach a certain age and have a few quid by , you are possibly more likely to give to others . when you're younger every penny seems to be going on something - it's like a treadmill . don't feel so down about it - maybe donate no longer goods you use to a charity shop . no idea how much admin costs are btw , i once was told 25% ,but that was for a shop - and those who stop you in town are on a good wedge . |

Remember the Rwanda Genocide? I know someone who earned a nice bit of commission "selling" airspace on a radio station to a major charity who were appealing for donations.
The radio station could have donated the airspace but didn't and made a nice bit of profit from it, profit that ultimately comes from donations. |

I watch House (tv show) and there are non stop cancer adverts during the breaks

anyone who makes large sums of money from those adverts should take a good look at themselves

Media are businesses like any other, if putting on Charity ads is going to cost them money they will only do it in exceptional circumstances.
Otherwise Charities are treated as just another punter. |

Not so bothered about TV ads, it's when people knock on your door at 6.30 in the evening and you're supposed to feel 'guilty' for not wanting to speak to them!

You want to take a look at what some of the CEOs of some of these charities pay themselves too.

Charities (the big ones especially) are run like a normal business and they have no issues paying the bosses and senior management huge salaries.
Save the children boss is on a huge whack of money! Is it wrong? Just doesn't sit as easily with me because of the work they do and the adverts they put out...IMO I would rather give to a charity where not so much goes to chief exec. |

Charity begins at home, if someone needs a helping hand then I'd try and help but I ain't giving to charities that take most of the money for themselves. The hard sell is also off putting, they won't get a penny off me.

I find the text a fiver ones absolutely disgusting, whatever happened to we're happy to accept anything no matter how small.

I don't understand why they don't filter the water or boil it. Why they don't keep their animals OUT of the water OR dig their OWN well.
Basically, I don't understand why they simply don't seem to do anything for themselves to ease their burden. |

Thinly veiled "I have got 240 pound coins in my jar" thread on imo. I know someone who works for a charity and earns good money. She can afford to have a Man U season ticket and she lives in London.

The advertising agencies charge nothing for making these ads. The Charities themselves NOT paying huge salaries to their chief execs. The Charities NOT having offices in the most expensive parts of London. The Money given ALL going to its correct destination. Not much chance of any of these happening though  |
