he hadn't gone to work - he was on a night out with work colleagues (fellow policemen) and was thought to have been attacked because they had been recognised as police officers

Detectives investigating the death of off-duty police constable Neil Doyle have arrested a man on suspicion of murder, Merseyside Police said.
The 28-year-old suspect handed himself in to police last night and is currently being interviewed by detectives, officers said. Pc Doyle, 36, was attacked in Liverpool city centre in the early hours yesterday during a Christmas night out with colleagues. He was due to go on his honeymoon next month. Pc Doyle was with two other off-duty officers when they were attacked by three men in Colquitt Street at around 3.15am. His colleagues were both treated in hospital for facial injuries. A Merseyside Police spokesman said detectives were investigating the possibility that the officers were recognised from their work. "It's one line of inquiry that we are looking at but it's by no means the set-in-stone motive," he said. Pc Doyle, who joined the force in May 2004, was taken to the Royal Liverpool Hospital after the attack, but died a short time later. The officer, who got married in July, had received a commendation for his actions in arresting three men after a violent robbery. He was based at Eaton Road police station in West Derby. Peter Singleton, chairman of Merseyside Police Federation, said the police community was "devastated" by Pc Doyle's death. "Devastated is the nearest word I can think of," he said. "His family, friends and colleagues are absolutely devastated. I spoke to the colleagues who were out with him and they were in absolute bits. "He exemplified the British bobby. He was a solid, good, hard-working, honest copper. Losing a colleague like Neil in such a tragic way is absolutely devastating." |

Where they recognized or did they get into an argument, start pushing their weight about? 3.15 in the morning and probably tanked up did they stick their faces into someone elses business? A hard habit to lose. Two sides to every story as they say. |

No we don't know what happened for sure yet
But if they were attacked because they were recognised as police officers, then the attackers would have to be in the wrong So I think a murder/manslaughter charge may well follow but we don't certain as yet |

One works for an international sports marketing company.
The other one is a football coach on the books in Oklahoma. My gut feeling is that the police are not the victims of sour grapes after being recognized, but that obnoxious behaviour was involved leading to an argument and then more. |

However it was 3.15am how long had the cops been boozing for? tanked up and obnoxious is always a possibility. |

The awful thing about this case is this imo. Even if the officers were attacked by 3 men that were recognisable, lawyers will, move heaven and earth for a manslaughter case. We have to be realistic and remember that policemen have little say in upholding the law of this land, due to being opposed by the lawyers that have reduced sentences from petty to even the most shocking crimes. Harry Roberts was released for killing three officers after 40 odd years, some great train robbers served 30 for stealing money from the establishment, where is the justice? |

Two ex-footballers are due in court today charged with the street murder of off-duty Merseyside PC Neil Doyle.
Andrew Taylor, 28, and Christopher Spendlove, 30, are alleged to have killed the newly-married officer, 36, in Liverpool city centre. Two other off-duty colleagues also on a Christmas night out with PC Doyle were injured in the assault in Colquitt Street in the early hours of Friday morning. Taylor and Spendlove, who are close friends, are both known around Merseyside’s non-league football circuit and played together under scholarships in America. |

He also played as a defender for Vauxhall Motors and Burscough before reportedly turning his hand to working for an international sports marketing company. Spendlove, who as a schoolboy played for Everton and Preston North End, is currently listed as an assistant coach at American side Oklahoma Energy FC, who are in the third tier of US professional football. He was awarded a scholarship with Oklahoma City University while playing for St Helens Town in 2007. Oklahoma Energy FC tonight said they had dismissed Spendlove, who is originally from Stockbridge Village, from the club. |

But their word against a police officers, they may have a devil of job proving it because the police tend to get believed But if you get that feeling Angel, fair enough, you are basically saying these are two good guys who would not attack without reason? People make a lot of assumptions with a case like this .Usually , the person who has been killed is assumed to have been entirely blameless.
That may be the case , maybe not . My first assumption going by the way it was presented - that they were identified as police officers by their attackers - was most likely gangster/thug type characters that Liverpool seems to have an awful lot of . But know it seems they are mostly known as local footballers and that they had worked in America ? You'd struggle to get work in the US if you have any convictions at all . Hard to see a hitherto law abiding person attacking someone who was a police officer for no reason other than that  |
