The shortest day is usually 21 December, but the earliest sunset is 12 December, and the latest sunrise is 31 December. Why are the earliest sunset and latest sunrise so far apart?

The reason is that a solar day i.e. the time it takes for the sun to return to the meridian you happen to be on is typically not quite 24 hours. Its sometimes more and sometimes less. 24 hours is actually the length of a mean solar day or the average length of the solar day over a year. The length of a solar day can differ from 24 hours by as much as 16 and a half minutes. It varies due to effects caused by the tilt of the earths axis and the fact that the orbit of the earth around the sun is not perfectly circular (which causes the speed at which the earth orbits the sun to vary slightly through the year). When the solar day is shorter than 24 hours the position of the sun in the sky at clock noon edges gradually westwards day by day, when its longer than 24 hours it edges eastwards. Sunset and sunrise are symmetric around solar noon (the time the sun crosses your meridian), not clock noon. Between around the beginning of September and Christmas Day the sun is already west of your meridian at clock noon so solar noon is earlier than clock noon (by around 3 minutes on 12th December). As the day is symmetrical around solar noon, less than half the days sunlight occurs after clock noon and more than half before. After Christmas Day (until mid-April) the sun is still east of your meridian by clock noon so solar noon is later than clock noon (again by around 3 minutes on the 31st December) and more than half the days sunlight occurs after clock noon and less than half before. Close to the shortest day the actual length of daylight time varies very little so the effects of these changes in the difference between solar time and clock time become quite apparent in this asymmetry in sunrise and sunset times. The changing difference between solar time and clock time through the year is known as the equation of time and can sometimes be found on old sundials in the form of an analemma - a figure of eight etched on the face of the sundial which is used to correct the reading on the dial (solar time) to clock time.

I went out one day last week just as the light was going - it was only about 3pm but a very rainy, murky day so the visibility was terrible.
With my 'Stag' I couldn't see the number of the buses until they were about 10 feet away from me, so kept hailing every one I saw, only to say "Sorry" when I'd finally seen the number and they'd stopped.
I must have done it to five buses - and one fire engine.

I find that mornings are the best time of the day so I miss sunlight in the mornings rather than evenings. 5am on a summer's morning can be beautiful, not so great this time of the year.

Well I do like the mornings, but it is always a rush, up at seven, out the door at seven forty, at work at eight twenty.
mornings are great when you can look out at the snow at 11am cooking breakfast

if lack of daylight is your problem ,spare a thought for me ,i only see 4 to 5 hours daylight at this time of year 
Get a Seasonal Affective Disorder light.....if you feel low in winter.
Or live in a south facing property, great on a clear crisp winters day, no need for the central heating.
trouble is ,the sun is so low at the moment most folk don't see it behind the houses - and it has been pretty sunny this month - very unusual for Dec

Not a cloud in the sky andit is still pretty light here at four minutes to five. Love this time of year.
I agree rob_dylan. Some people say that January and February are their least favourite months, but I like them, because the light at the end of the tunnel becomes ever brighter. The month I like least is definitely October.

November is my worst month. No redeeming features except that I normally try to plan at least a week somewhere overseas during the month.
I like this time of year also. Sitting next to the wood burner with a book and a harveys bristol cream while it's freezing outside - ooh, isn't it?

Daylight has only just gone here in Sunny Stoke (even though it's been grey all day - as per).
Only a couple more weeks till we put the clocks forward to somewhere where they should be (even though they'll still be an hour behind).

Not as cold as it has been in Stoke today.
It's been flaming perishing for days on end at times in the last couple of months.
This last Saturday night was very cold - and I had to whack the heating up again - but I turned it down again today.

it was colder here than in Stoke and everywhere else in the UK which happens occasionally , 6c to your 8c .
yet the other week it was the warmest in the UK for 3 consec days in the mid teens .
East anglia has a weird climate (Colchester) for example has the warmest and driest summer of any town in the UK (23.5) during the hottest month but also has some of the coldest weather in the UK in short bursts - the East Anglian Mistral i call it
Where i am is an identical match to the outskirts of Paris and up to Lille and Amiens (for the record )
you'll have to find for me Stoke's nearest match
