The annual Geminids meteor shower is hitting the earth's atmosphere tonight and it may be possible to see up to 20 times as many shooting stars in the skies over Great Britain.
The meteors will be most visible between 11pm and 1am tonight and tomorrow night.

Spent a couple of minutes looking up at the sky at 1am this morning, when I put the dog out before bedtime. Even in that time I saw a couple of meteors streaking westwards from the direction of Orion and the Pleiades. Could be a good display tonight on that basis. On the other hand I live out in the sticks, so I do have the benefit of dark skies.

For those interested in this sort of thing, there may also be a comet visible with binoculars, and fairly easy to find, over the next month or so

I didn't look as I'm totally light polluted and dim objects are impossible to see.
Thanks for that link Degs, I didn't know about it. I've tried several times to spot M13, the brightest globular cluster with my Goto scope without luck so I doubt I'll pick that comet up. I bought myself a pair of 15x70 Binoculars out of Tesco's (http://www.tesco.com/direct/celestron-73150111-skymaster-binocular-15x70/213-2969.prd?pageLevel=&skuId=213-2969). Doubled up on my clubcard vouchers and got Quidco. In all I paid £15 on my debit card so picked up a bargain. I've spotted the Moons of Jupiter with them but fuzzy objects like nebulae are impossible to see (except M42). I really need to get to a dark site but most nights I can't be arsed, I'm definitely an armchair astronomer  Did any of you know, you can put your phone camera up to your telescope or binocular eyepiece and take photo's? Pretty easy for bright objects like the Moon, all you need is a steady hand and a tripod. |
