The .9 on the end of Petrol Prices

they're advertising that price, so I reckon should give a credit note

Obviously a massive marketing rip off. Multiply 10 of the non existent .9's and they have got another 9 pence off you straight away. 10 x .9 = 9

The dropping of the .1 off a price is pure marketing b0llix, and a far cry from the original reason of shaving prices just under a round figure since the invention of the cash register/till in 1879.

Early mechanical registers were entirely mechanical, without receipts. The employee was required to ring up every transaction on the register, and when the total key was pushed, the drawer opened and a bell would ring, alerting the manager to a sale taking place. Those original machines were nothing but simple adding machines.

Since the registration is done with the process of returning change, the odd pricing came about because by charging odd amounts the cashier had to open the till for the penny change and thus announce the sale.

Seen petrol priced at £114p today whilst I was learning to drive it was at least 20p more than that! Point is most people don't round it to the nearest £pound. With it being Asda the actual price was £114.7p.

As most Chit Chatters have brains like super computers it shouldn't cause much of a problem. However, the Australian and Politics forumites will be grateful for the heads up imo.
