My pc is running slow, when opening e-mails it pauses, even simple browsing is taking longer than usual I dont want to go down the complete re-boot of windows can anyone recommend any free software to diagnose problems.Its less than a year old overclocked with a fair spec and plenty memory available.
I had it built with a 1 TB SSD (feck knows why)and it is sitting idle doing nowt, can anyone help with how and when this will actually kick in.

have you checked for a virus? i would expect you have but hijack this and malwarebytes are both free and will find most problems of that type
after that perhaps do a system retore rather than a windows restore, there have been a fair few microsoft updates in the last couple of weeks on mine perhaps taking your pc back a couple of days will solve the problem? |

Download CCleaner which is free to clean up your pc in addition to above.

ty gents I have kaspersky running permanently(scans are good) and tried ccleaner yesterday it is slightly better but still something amiss, appreciate the advice

Is it your PC thats running slow or just your internet connection?
I have had problems in the past with a slow connection that has been solved by just restarting the router. |

speed test results are ok, and I used the bt line test tool and it gave same readings as speed test so I don't think it is my line, but thanks anyway

What @Gin says -- start with the network and work back.
In OP, what is meant by "complete reboot of Windows" that is being avoided? Presumably the PC has been rebooted within recent living memory and it is reinstallation and not rebooting that is not wanted? And where is this idle SSD? Is the C: drive on the SSD? Does task manager show anything hogging resources? |

I mean restarting from disc and wiping everything,The ssd is the (E) drive(whatever that means),Task manager says 5% cpu and 33% memory. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/12/12/bt_infinity_working_to_fix_the_problem_after_three_days_of_outages/ Seemingly there are bt infinity issues but speedtest still shows as normal,hoping it might be that as the problems are nationwide. |

If you've got a 1TB SSD then not having the C: drive on it is silly (unless you had specific uses in mind for E: which you do not). You'd not need all of the SSD for C:, but we are where we are. It will probably not make enough of a difference to be worth changing now. You might want to think about moving the page file to E: though.
Yes, it sounds like the BT Infinity problems are the root cause of your slowness. The speed test being OK is consistent with, say, DNS problems -- once name resolution has occurred and the route established, a download would run as normal. |

ok cheers,so what would I have to do physically to make use of the SSD will it make the pc faster/slower,my C drive is showing 83.1GB free of 118GB at the moment.

Re making use of SSD.
I am suspicious of your 118GB C: drive, and reckon that could already be on the SSD. It would not be easy to buy a "spinning rust" hard drive that small. |
