It generally happens at this time of year on here, for dads still here, and dads who have sadly gone.

My dad passed away 37 years ago today, just 9 days before his 56th birthday. I have a photo of him on my desk, and another by the sofa where I sit and watch television.

A mountain of a man, but a gentle giant, who never got to see all his grandchildren.

I don't drink alcohol any more, but I've got a small brandy here, such is the occasion.

R.I.P. dad, the grandkids would have loved you.

"To dads!"

It was the 25th anniversary of my dad's passing last September, CMAT.

There hasn't been one single day since then that I haven't missed him.

Some people just mean so much to you you can never just 'let it lie'.

I loved that man more than life.

- and if Sparky comes on now and says I've only missed my dad since last September - I'll flatten him!

My father was an alcocholic, your refernce to drinking would have cheered him up no end because Christmas or New Year wasn't his favourite time of year; my mother's belief was that he never cared for partaking with amutuers.

Ha ha no moves.  That has always been my line.  Cant abide christmas and new year because the bars are clogged up with amateur drinkers.

2 years nov dad mum last year end sept last christmas was completely different from all others i have known-mum just loved having the whole family round had to have 2 sitting for christmas dinner, father who was a typical miner hard as nails but really as soft as sh!te with grandchildren etc.
I never understood my father until probably the last 15 years of his life we fought over everything up till then.
I had a quiet weep a couple of times last christmas but this year i will be crying buckets both were really good parents in different ways and you dont appreciate it till there gone.
cheers to all good parents.

Those who live in the hearts of others never die! Their spirits live on in your thoughts. They only really die when you think of them no longer or there is no one left to think of them.

I still have both my parents and I see them every day. I still call them mummy and daddy.

Some lovely stories on this thread reminds me how lucky I am not to have experienced such a loss.

Nice thread guys….. but am I the only one concerned to see that our friend Diddy has started posting in small letters, rather than the much-loved capitals.  Surely his account hasn't been hacked?

A very worrying development.

Seventeen years since my dad went, still seems like last week... very sadly missed and always will be. We'll drink a toast to him at Christmas dinner but he's always in our thoughts anyway.

4.5 years for me. I could never forget when he went as he died 4 days before my lad was born. People say it's easier as time passes. I am not sure easier is right, but different. Here's to the bf dads past and present.

Dewey, I too thought my Dad was indestructible, to see him in such pain towards the end of his days literally broke all our hearts and it was a blessed relief when he passed away in the end.

79.5 and 82.5 are the average age of death for men and women in the UK.  Thought it would be lower.  Not long before my dad's on borrowed time.  Last time I saw him in October he was talking about his will and his assets.  Don't see them much as they live too far away and the sad thing is 2 of my kids are allergic (one seriously) to something in their house, so I had to stop them going up there.

Both my parents have departed to the magic planet ( that`s what me and my  kids call it )

Dad 1999
Ma 2004

Neither got to see my 2 kids. Such a shame.

A brandy I think (my second this month, a bit ott imo)

My dad would have been 93 today.

No chance of getting to that age given the family history, but 55 was far too young.

To dads.

Kiss me goodnight and say my prayers
Leave the light on at the top of the stairs
Tell me the names of the stars up in the sky
A tree taps on the window pane
That feeling smothers me again
Daddy is it true that we all have to die

At the top of the stairs
Is darkness

I closed my eyes and when I looked
Your name was in the memorial book
And what had become of all the things we planned
I accepted the commiserations
Of all your friends and your relations
But there's some things I still don't understand

You were so tall
How could you fall?

Some photographs of a summer's day
A little boy's lifetime away
Is all I've left of everything we've done
Like a pale moon in a sunny sky
Death gazes down as I pass by
To remind me that I'm but my father's son

I offer up to you
This tribute
I offer up to you
This tank park salute

"Tank Park Salute - Billy Bragg"

I empathize with that AG. My dad missed seeing his only grandson by 4 days. I take solace in the fact that my mum has enjoyed good times with the little fella.

That`s what got my mother Hank, although the tumour Haemorrhaged and a heart attack was given the official reason.

I am sure we can raise a glass to mothers as well.

Absolutely AG - why not raise two glasses instead of one? Grin
