DAVID Cameron’s plans to overhaul the benefits rules for EU migrants are a “red line” that cannot be crossed, Poland’s deputy foreign minister claims.
Rafal Trzaskowski, who is responsible for Polish European affairs, said his country would not accept any British attempt to bring in rules to pay benefits to migrants only after four years or to extradite people who could not find work.
He added: “This is an absolute red line, that there is no discrimination on grounds of nationality.”
The comments come as figures reveal there are 679,000 Poles in Britain – only 71,000 fewer than the population of Poland’s second city Krakow.
A recent survey has suggested that up to a million Poles were considering moving to Britain to look for work next year.
One in five out of a survey of 600 working-age people in Poland told researchers they were thinking of emigrating by the end of 2015 to boost their earnings.
There are already 500,000 Polish-born people living in the UK following the relaxation of border restrictions for migrants from Eastern Europe.
