A woman (single parent, one child) works for a friend of mine and complains about not being able to afford a cooker but has just spent nearly £200 on another tattoo and can afford the latest Iphone. Just another unfortunate who's problems are all down to this arrogant and ignorant Government.
Yay to the single mother - she's working. So she's only half a bad person then. I don't know of anyone who would see a child deprived so they could have a tattoo, that's against every motherly instinct, I'd have thought. So is it literally true and as simple as you are making out? I doubt it, personally.

You see one cheap and crass programme on the TV - and you state the character ' Silver ' is a classic example.
What evidence have you got that places the 13 million people in this country living below the poverty line, in the same light ?
It's a bias obnoxious programme, reaching an audience that feeds on such inflammatory reporting. Akin to readership of the likes of The Sun. The government love programmes like this. It lends itself to the divisive strategy being deployed by them, that gets sections of the non wealthy society pointing the finger at others, and placing the blame.
And you're falling for it.

Posted this on facebook just now, it rather summarises my opinion. There ARE people who slip through the safety net, but lack of food is not the hole they fall through.
I have kind of mixed feelings about food banks, or rather how they've become such a political football. Time and time again you see people saying how bad it is that people have to rely on food banks. But that's simply not the case. Food banks only exist in very wealthy countries, where people spend far less of their income than they used to on food. It's around 9% now, was 15% before the recession, and 33% 50 years ago. In other parts of the world it is as high as 50%. Don't get me wrong, I think they are a good thing, but they are a sign of wealth and generosity, not hardship. I was briefly unemployed 20 years ago, and had way less to get by on than today's unemployed. But I still managed to feed myself. Living off cheap food might not be that nice, but it's a lot nicer than turning up to hospital and finding they can't treat you, or can't fund the drugs that will keep you alive. Nobody starves to death in the UK through lack of money.

I've read some of the report into 'hunger in Britain'.
What is absent is any reference to peoples' own responsibility to be clever, ingenious and shrewd when it comes to housekeeping.
Buying, storing and cooking food well is the key and yet it's absent in the report.
If I was poor I would do all I could to learn how to make every last penny count in buying the types of food that store well, can be cooked in different ways and are filling.
Ideas on this thread already include oats and rice. I buy rice in 10kg bags for £15. It works out at about 14p a portion.
The report mentions a high percentage of kids arriving at school having not eaten brekkie. And the govt gets the blame....
You couldn't make this up..

The poverty line is typically defined by those living below 60% of the average income. 60% of the average income in the UK is still a shedload of money compared to most of the other people in the world. I'm not defending wealthy bankers/politicians, but saying that people are starving when in fact obesity is a bigger problem among the poor is just ridiculous.

.......The death of a child is always a tragedy. The avoidable deaths of thousands of children under five years old every year in the UK is a scandal, according to the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) and the National Children's Bureau, who say that inequalities in our society which leave many families in poverty and deprivation are to blame.
Their views, expressed in a report this week, Why Children Die, put flesh on stark new statistics published on Friday from the most authoritative number-crunchers on health in the world, the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation in Seattle, part of the University of Washington. In their paper, published in the Lancet, they show that children under five in the UK are more likely to die than in any other western European country except Malta. Nearly five babies of every 1,000 born in the UK will not live to their fifth birthday.
The data is broken down by life stages. The UK does particularly badly in the first six days of life, in one month to a year and – worst of all – in ages one to four. The reasons are slightly different, but there is one outstanding link factor: deaths rise with socio-economic deprivation.
In 2012, 3,000 died under the age of one. Those babies tend to be premature and of low birthweight. Their mothers may be young and still growing themselves, they may be smokers or they may not eat well – the RCPCH report says the increasing number of people accessing food banks is a concern.......

The poverty line is ridiculously high. Hence so many are 'classified' as being in poverty..
I believe it's calculated based on peoples' incomes compared with those around them. That is a bit silly imo. Just because many in society are well off doesn't then mean those less so are in poverty..

They may be smokers...brilliant! Cost of a packet of cigs, 8 quid, cost of four pints milk, 1 quid.
That doesn't mean there isn't a relationship between socio-economic deprivation and ill health - there clearly is - but food that they could easily afford anyway is not the solution.

I’ve seen very little genuine poverty in this country, I don’t say it doesn’t exist but I challenge your figures, 13 million people in this country may or may not be in relative poverty but that isn’t real poverty by a LONG CHALK. Try reading “Road To Wigan Pier” or “Down and Out In Paris And London” or travel to Africa to see real poverty. I’ve been in Africa a few times and seen the real McCoy up close and it’s pretty grim. Real poverty is where you’re GENUINELY at risk of starving etc or dying for lack of basic medical care. NOT can’t afford my shopping or electric cos I blew it on cider , ****, betfair , fobt etc etc.
In my teens I used to work in a corner shop in a village that was a mix of private and council houses, I saw plenty of the benefits street type characters then, none of them were in REAL poverty. One set of kids were maybe scraping along the bottom but they were still being fed, if their useless mother didn’t blow as much of her dole on Ace Lager and cheap **** they’d have been in a better state.

How do food banks work? Having read through this read I'm beginning to suspect it's not a place where you can store your elk if you don't have enough room in your own freezer.
More like a place where you can get free food if you can't or don't want to pay for it? Do you have to prove that you're out of money and hungry, or do they just take your word for it? Open to illegal immigrants? How often, and how much food can you get from there? All over the country or just in some places? Who pays for the food / donates the food to the food banks?
Thank you:)

I help out at a local school and particularly help with what are known as the disadvantaged kids. The reason they come to school with no breakfast is nothing to do with lack of money or the Governments fault. Sorry but it's just bad parenting. We club together to give them something to eat when they come to school and finish lessons early so we can feed them something before they go home. Not being on the staff I am not told what exactly are the problems at home but one teacher told me when I started that it was better not to know as a lot of it is too upsetting and difficult to cope with.

Well to start with who else but the parent is responsible for getting a 6yo ready for school in the morning. The Government?
Or a real live example: I help with teaching the kids a bit of gardening and this year we grew a lot of vegetables which we made into soup for the kids to eat before they went home. The one lad missed the soup at school so we gave him some to take home. The next day we again made some soup but the lad said he didn't want any as he didn't like it. We got him to try it again and he was surprised that it was hot. His mother hadn't bothered to heat it up for him.

I am still loving this idea of people bombing down the job agency at 5am. They could go like, at nine, when it's open, and maybe take a bit of time to look after their kids before then - which many do, to be fair. We don't live in Dickens' England any more, if you can afford cigarettes, you can afford to send your kid to school with a full stomach.

I feel for those who had a job , had kids then lost the job and need help.
Those that had no job but had kids anyway can just go get fkd!! They're being utterly irresponsible in expecting other people to pick up of the bill to raise their kids. The sooner they chop child benefit after the first kid the better.
A few of you on here need to get it through your heads that it isn’t the place of those with decent jobs to forever play the part of Boxer in Animal Farm working their nuts off to finance the bottom end. People seek to educate themselves, get suitable training , go and work their nuts off to finance their families not other people’s. I’m sick of the handouts entitlement culture that’s mushroomed in the last 2 or 3 decades.
To be honest if you’re 35+ in this country and you’ve no real skills and/or education then you’re very probably one or more of the following :- Thick Useless Lazy Lacking in work ethic
What have you been doing with your lives??? Education was pretty much free. Even now it only costs about 5k to train a fully certified domestic electrician, with which you can make very good money, so if you have or had a job at some point but it didn’t pay that great perhaps you should have thought about getting a loan to spend some money on training to further your economic position rather than a car/hols etc etc. Your life is your problem/responsibility not other people’s.

Even if we are all equal some will always be more equal than others. I'm not sure whether Orwell made the point but some will always be less equal.

A senior York politician has sparked a furious row by saying there is no real poverty in Britain and people should not donate to food banks.
Chris Steward, a Conservative councillor, said living standards had surged, that there was no need for food banks, that they were an insult to starving people around the world, and that donating to them allowed recipients to spend more money on alcohol and cigarettes.
"The fact some give food to food banks, merely enables people who can’t budget (an issue where schools should do much more and I have said the council should) or don’t want to, to have more money to spend on alcohol, cigarettes etc.”

the RCPCH report says the increasing number of people accessing food banks is a concern.......
Except for functional purposes, the numbers are slightly down compared to 2006 when there had been 7 years continuous growth, govt was of the approved colour for the righteous on here, and the abolition of boom and bust had been achieved.
The reasons why crisis handouts are marginally down are a bit more complex and don't reflect well on this govt, but people who think it's increased are mis-staken. And we still have a lot less than FRA and GER.

You should see Queens Road market in Upton Park when it closes for the night. It gets invaded for free food from skips.
So do the charity shops where bags are left outside overnight.
I used to use an ATM near the Oxfam shop in East Ham every Saturday, and the bags left outside overnight were opened by people waiting at bus stops on their way to work.
This was at 5-15 a.m.

Only if the bins are on your property, i.e the supermarket, and behind gates.
Queens Road is an open market with no gates (or used to be, no idea these days)
Rathbone Market in Canning Town is the same. A slip road off the A13 goes behind the shops into the car parks. Supermarket skips were on pavements outside the back doors, and fully open to the public. They never took long to overflow as other shops dumped their stuff in them.

Please to say I checked and we do at least recycle all food waste, turning it either into fuel or animal feed.
Fresh bread is the biggest problem. It only lasts two days, and there is pressure on the bakers to make sure we have some from each variety...and we do a lot of different bread, into the evening, when we have very few customers, but could have a check from the region to see we have them on sale.
Most of the other reduced stuff gets snaffled by our regular bargain hunters.

In the 1986/87, a Spar shop in Downham, Kent, used to put out of date food on the shelf at huge discounts. I would assume that's against the law now. One day out of date cakes, for 10p.
I only went in on Sunday mornings as they never opened early enough during the week for me. I used to get a bag full for a pound.

Yes, I was in a shop in Stoke town last week where they were selling Knorr Stock Pots at about half their normal retail price - but they did say on the shelf sticker "Best before date November 2014"
Massive saving for something which did not matter at all.

If it's the one in the former Woolworths it's a PoundShop. Of course you won't know it as the former Woolworth's, you will know it as Barnaby's Emporium Of Delights or something.

It's not called a 'Poundshop' though - it's called something like 'Stoke Bargains'.
They don't have any baskets, and there's about two trolleys knocking about - at various, abandoned, spots - so you have to just hold everything in your hands and chuck it on the counter - but they are cheap!

Is eating porridge every day really cheaper than a box coco pops from the pound shop?
Is arsing about making an unsatisfying soup cheaper than a £1 frozen pizza from Iceland?
Soup and porridge? Isn't that the rations they were on in I'm a celeb?
I think most benefit recipients know the most cost efficient way to eat is to buy a big freezer!

No, making a nice soup for less money than some aweful **** from Iceland.
No idea, but I am pretty sure there were some kangaroo bollocks in there. Still taste better than a one pound pizza.
No it isn't, unless you just can't be arsed.
