I know nothing about engines but I recall when I was first driving ,mechanics would whistle though their teeth and say things like "the big ends gone""head needs regrinding\" "Needs new rings" Brake fluid was regularly checked and bleeding of the brakes was a vital skill, the radiator always needed topping up and some of us had a chrome stick to check the tyre pressure. I think misfiring was a problem sometimes but I cant be sure.
Oil level check brake fluid level check transmission/power steering fluid level check windscreen water bottle level check tyre pressure check
The old days of just 4 plugs, 4 leads and a distributor cap are long gone.
My car's a nightmare under the bonnet, for me.
I have no idea how it all works, I just know how to drive it.

I remember when I was a kid my dad and my brother some times discussing mechanics and the 'big end being gone' was one of the mysteries of life I would learn at a later date. I never did though!

You should still be checking your engine oil, brake fluid, power-assisted steering fluid, and tyre pressures/visual inspection on a weekly basis. Radiator level too. Transmission/gearbox fluid less frequently.

I know that one of them is a character on Coronation Street...he was in the news recently (I think). I would have to hazard a guess that the others are from 'East Enders'. But, in answer to your question...No, I am none of them. I'm just me.

Burton-Brewers 06 Dec 14 07:13 at 13 I stripped down and rebuilt a Vauxhall Viva 1256 engine with my dad, I also wouldn't know where to start with this computer controlled set up.
In the late 1970s me and the bloke next door rebuilt a Mini engine and sold the car to a bird from St Neots, Cambs, but only after she had insisted it be resprayed red, with red and white chequered roof, and black 7s in white circles on the doors. She had it 4 or 5 days before she wrote it off when she hit a tree. Lucky not to have been killed.
I tried to change a hose on my car about 5 years ago. After 2 hours, and the third bucket of hot soapy water to make the hose supple was iced over, and getting one hand stuck under the manifold trying to squeeze the hose on the inlet pipe, I gave up.
'My man' came up from Essex the next weekend, and I went indoors to make him a cuppa, and then explain how hard it was with big hands. He drank the tea, went outside, came back in three minutes later and said 'Done it, need a screwdriver for the jubilee clips.' Flash bastard

I buy cars with a years MOT for less than £500 and drive them into the ground and spend nothing on them. I'm currently driving an Amica that has had the check engine light on for the past 3 months. I put oil in it yesterday and it pained me to spend the money. Scrapping them returns me £100 which goes on my next banger. I get a years driving for less than some of you will spend on a set of tyres
