I have watched this with incredulity since Grayling the nipple banned books for prisoners.
happily a high judge has slapped him down.
You cant ban books simply because you cant stop drugs getting in its utterly stupid.
Books are the lifeblood of erudition, banning such does no good but further divides.
every prisoner should have reading time imo not stopped from reading, its pure stupidity

For what it is worth,every prison has a library where they have weekly access to pick books until their hearts are content.Moreover if the library does not have a book the prisoner desires they will source said book from the local library on a loan basis.
Now why would a prisoner insist on having a book brought in from outside when there is adequate provision for him thru facilities inside,I will leave it for you to decide. |

You answered a query I had. Having never been to jail I wanst sure whether prisons had libraries or not. But given my experience of non jail libraries under this government cuts Id suggest they probs aint smash ducks eh? The point here isnt about the desire to absorb books not within, its a defense against not holding the ills from without |

according to the radio today the prison libraries are poorly stocked and you cant visit them freely.
Why cant they just open the parcels that the books are delivered to inmates in ?? |

I have already said there is more than adequate provision for prisoners to have access to reading facilities,I could give you lots of reasons why prisoners would prefer for their desire to be educated "thru books brought in from the outside" but no one is interested in that.

If outside jail's libraries that are getting shut almost as quickly as pubs are concerned (and which I have every reason to suspect prison ones even less adapt) then it stands to reason any erudite individual may seek outside assistance no? |

The authorities should decide which books, if any, should be available to any specific prisoner. They should also control it's point of supply. Prisoners should be treated with suspicion at all times, especially when it includes contact with the outside world. They are always planning something.

Who is supposed to have to read all these books to establish whether they are appropriate for a prisoner or not? What if they are in Arabic or are interpretations of the Koran, for example? They aren't all going to be Enid Blyton books or one of Jordan's autobiographies. An appropriate time for a note on Newham.  Some time ago, in a bid to encourage cultures to mix with each other, Newham Council removed all foreign newspapers from the libraries, stopped printing govt documents in other languages, and stopped the use of Council paid interpreters. I'd guess it didn't work. 25% of the population don't have English as their first language. |
