IFA 2014 – Nokia Lumia 830 an ‘affordable flagship’ phone

Tempted by a sleek smartphone but put off by the price? Then the all-new Nokia Lumia 830 could be the phone for you. Announced today at IFA 2014, it’s designed to offer a high-quality smartphone experience at a reasonable price.
With a price tag of around €330 (before tax), we expect it to come in at around £300-330. That’s a lot cheaper than the likes of the Apple iPhone 5s (£549) or the Samsung Galaxy S5 (£520). Read on for our first impressions.

Nokia Lumia 830 – three key features
A decent camera – cameras are big business in the smartphone world, with every manufacturer trying to get ahead and help you take the best snaps possible. The Nokia 830 is no exception: it has a 10Mp PureView camera and Nokia claims the optical image stabilisation system is the thinnest to date for a Lumia.
The camera software has had an upgrade too, and now sports the Rich Shot feature. This allows you to manipulate photos after you’ve taken them to make sure the light levels and colour balance are just right.
For example, Rich Shot automatically takes a photo with and without the flash. It then blends the two shots together and lets you slide the level up and down to get a shot that’s neither too bright nor too dingy. We’ll get the Lumia 830 into our lab as soon as possible to see how good the new camera is.
The 1Mp front-facing camera is designed with selfies in mind. During the press conference, Nokia squeezed 12 people into the shot, and there was still room for a couple more.
Lumia Denim – the Lumia 830 will ship with a software update – Nokia Denim. The biggest change for us in the UK will be the introduction of Cortana, Nokia’s voice control system. You’ll be able to pick up the phone, say ‘hey Cortana’ and follow up with an instruction to command the phone by voice.
Full integration with Microsoft – IFA 2014 is Nokia’s first press conference since coming under Microsoft’s umbrella, and the Lumia phone is fully integrated with Microsoft services. For example, it comes with pre-installed Office apps and 15GB of Onedrive storage. These features will come in handy for getting a bit of work done and storing and accessing your files across devices.
Expert view – hurray for decent affordable smartphones
jess finalThe Lumia 830 doesn’t have market-leading specs, but then it doesn’t need them.
The 5-inch 1280×720 screen is sharp and bright, good for browsing the web and watching videos.
It comes in a range of four colours – orange, green, dark grey and white – and has a smooth plastic finish. At 150g it feels nice and light and overall gives the impression of a decent bit of kit.
It can’t compete with the likes of the super-cheap Moto G on price, but if you’re after a solid, well-designed mid-range phone, the Lumia 830 is certainly worth a look. The newly announced ‘affordable’ Sony Xperia E3 is another one for your list.

Thanks Kenny, had a Nokia classic 6500 for years, its had it, baffled by all this modern tech, got one being delivered tomorrow, £25 per month with unlimited calls and texts and 2000gb whatever that means
You're very welcome, Deptford. I'm also pretty hopeless with technology, that's why I'm looking at the new IPhone. Apart from having a glowing report it's supposed to be easy to operate. 2000gb, think that's something to do with Great Britain.
