I'm still not sure on this one. The police have told so many other lies about this. A politician who is clearly a t1t or an organisation who have seen one (atm) member jailed for lying about what went on. Imagine trying to work out who to believe.
How calling someone a pleb ends up as a libel case is totally beyond me?????????????????????????????
Its not even a particularly an offensive word, people have called me plebs(probably deservedly)
I have called them plebs....any sensible human being forgets about it 5 mins
it just means someone been has the bit of an idiot which we all are at times
We have become a society who are obsessed with the trivial

He should have called him a ****, and be done with it, the thick copper would have understood that. A politician ..world leaders in Lying. A policeman ..world leaders in Lying...

"not the sort of man who would have had the wit, imagination or inclination to invent on the spur of the moment an account of what a senior politician had said to him in temper"
So he is too thick to have made it up so it is 'probably' true. What a mess.
According to the judge the copper was "not the sort of man who would have had the wit, imagination or inclination to invent on the spur of the moment an account of what a senior politician had said to him in temper"So he is too thick to have made it
He should know that courts are like lotteries. The judge surmised that he had used the word and said the PC was too thick to have made it up, so he says Mitchell is a liar.
Giving his ruling, Mr Justice Mitting said: "For the reasons given I am satisfied at least on the balance of probabilities that Mr Mitchell did speak the words alleged or something so close to them as to amount to the same including the politically toxic word pleb."
''satisfied at least on the balance of probabilities''
What kind of evidence is that?

Pretty much everybody was in agreement that he was fitted up by plod.
He was the victor in the court of public opinion but yet he decides to go to a court of law...

Stig Abell, managing editor of the Sun, also welcomed the verdict, hailing it as "a vindication for the Sun and its journalists - it is a victory for all journalism".

fancied an easy pay out from police ( funded by me and you, a.k.ka the real plebs)
quite a decent verdict imo, balance of probabilities must have been a tough call for the judge given the two sides at issue

Wasn't there an earlier claim of taped evidence which showed the police were lying ?
At least for everyone who has been fitted up by police lies there is some consolation in it happening to a leading politician if that is what has happened. Personally I am on the side of the police ... Cameron was quick to dismiss Mitchell.

Fortunes are lost all the time by people betting on the balance of probabilities.
He might just as well have tossed a coin and asked Mitchell to call heads or tails.

How can the legal costs amount to £3 million??? He either said it or he didnt. Why has it taken 2 years to achieve a verdict?? Did the barristers get together and have a sweepstake on how long they could keep it going!

@curious-cat -- some (other) police were lying (making out they were tourists who'd been shocked, for instance) but not, it appears, the ones most centrally involved.

Three million for a minor tantrum, how pleasing. The whole episode probably could have been avoided given a little humility.
Alas we are talking about an MP, and a Tory to boot, He was winning the "public sympathy vote" but his head was so far up his own arris, arrogance got the better of him. Bankruptcy (get out card) calling ?

No way. He should be able to claim this through his expenses.

He's never had my sympathy boxingthefox, glad he's been brought down a peg or two. I ran a quick search on the net and see that his net worth is estimated at 2.2 million so may need his mates to chip in a few quid for him.

Well that's what happens when you sell your soul to monetarism, you get generations of opportunistic spivvy speculators who chance their arm and input nowt.
Could say it's like backing the wrong horse.

If Mitchell swore at the copper and called him an pleb why didn't the copper just say "%*#+ you, ya ponce." Or something like that as the bloke cycled off? End of story really.
Whole thing astonishingly daft if you ask me.If Mitchell swore at the copper and called him an plebwhy didn't the copper just say "%*#+ you, ya ponce."Or something like that as the bloke cycled off? End of story really.
What do you mean after he's out of earshot? Maybe doff a cap to the master too and thank him for his grace upon us.
This tells a story, one of what the mindset is of the supposed ruling classes towards the very ppl kept in line while being fed feel good ethereal notions like 'democracy' that doesn't even exist in the real world.

Sounded like the judge was trying to make it up as he went along.
Id rather have the lie detectors in than this guesser in charge.
Id doubt the same verdict would be returned if it was trial by jury.

If some of his tory chums are to be believed he has form in this area.
Will be interesting where he pops up. Politics has this habit of churning MPs like sacked football managers. Recipe is usually to wait until a few others get found out over something else then bring em back like nowt ever happened.
This ruling makes him officially a liar too doesn't it? Sure there's room in politics still.
