Police have been called to more than 10 UK supermarkets amid crowd surges as people hunt for "Black Friday" offers.

Greater Manchester Police appealed for calm after attending five Tesco stores, making "at least two" arrests, and a Trafford store was closed shortly after the sale began at 00:01 GMT on Friday.

Police went to three Tescos and an Asda in London, and South Wales Police were called to a number of Tesco stores.

Originating in the US, Black Friday is becoming a major UK shopping day.

Police in Manchester tweeted: "At least two people arrested at #BlackFriday sales events already this morning. Keep calm people!"

In London, police were called by both Tesco staff and queuing shoppers as people gathered at the Glover Drive store in Edmonton.

Officers also attended Tesco stores in Willesden and Surrey Quays and an Asda in Edgware at around midnight.

The Metropolitan Police said officers worked with staff to "ensure that sale-goers were able to enter and exit the stores safely", and said no-one had been injured "as a result of the overcrowding".

In South Wales, police said they were called by concerned staff at a number of Tesco stores.

A spokesman said officers were twice called to Tesco in Excelsior Road, Cardiff, just after midnight, when concerns were raised about customer conduct inside the shop. No arrests were made.

There should be a ticketing system. Or, tell you what, let the queue in in batches of 5 with 30 second internals between them and nobody can buy more than 1 of each item type or 3 items in total, until everyone has been let in. What they are currently doing is a recipe for carnage.

Was in a café/bustro this afternoon and a guy was goin mental to the waitress who he seemed to know. Hadn't got what he was looking for, not sure what it was, bought something he didn't really want(A feckin stupid coffee machine he described it as) but saved £60 then got back to his car to find a £40 parking ticket on it. I had to bite my hand.

Looking at them pictures you would think the Border Agency could set up a shop next year and made a dent in the illegal immigrants numbers. One half price coffee maker should account for a dozen of them.

Saw on sky news website earlier, some woman had been queuing  for 5.5 hours to get a carpy tv. Shop wasn't opening for another 30 mins when she was being interviewed. She was mightly proud though that she was 2nd in the queue.

I thought if she had worked for those 6 hours, instead of waiting in the freezing cold then she could have bought herself a decent tv.

Retailers luv all this stuff, they get rid of all the rubbish they haven't been able to sell over the year. Also get rid of stock just before the new models come out.

And the queue did look very multicultural, apart from no white people in it.

bizarre how people would waste hours queueing but if they worked those hours they would be able to get a top class product.

Never been a shopper myself, im sure its a adrenalin buzz for some especially the females. i would rather pay the right price and sit at home.

I'm actually quite pleased. Planned on getting a Sony Blu-ray player for my brother for Xmas and the one I wanted was £84 earlier this week but I thought I'd wait in case it was reduced today and sure enough, down to £54. That was online though, if I had to go down to the shops today for it my brother would have been getting a hug for Xmas
