Relatives who have lost loved ones at the hands of UK police will stage a demonstration outside the US embassy in London in solidarity with the family and supporters of US teenager Michael Brown, shot dead by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
The protest at 5.30pm on Wednesday comes amid unrest on the streets of the St Louis suburb after a grand jury decided not to indict police officer Darren Wilson for killing 18-year-old Brown.
The shooting of Mark Duggan in Tottenham, north London, in August 2011 led to the biggest riots in modern English history. Duggan’s aunt, Carole, is due to speak along with Marcia Rigg, whose brother Sean died in police custody in 2008.
The London protest will be chaired by Wilf Sullivan, TUC race equality officer. Diane Abbott MP is also due to speak.
Carole Duggan said: “Mark Duggan has not got justice and neither has Mike Brown. The police should be there to protect us, not to kill our children.”
A separate protest against the US grand jury’s decision has been organised by London Black Revs. It is scheduled to begin outside the US embassy at 7pm.
