Ive asked this question in the pub before in the "lets talk b0ll0x" hour, but have yet to hear a plausible reply.
Just saying "a mobile phone" cuts no ice, as the logistics are impossible for 1 person.
It has to be something that you can manufacture a prototype of, with limited knowledge and funds, and market sufficiently to get it off the ground.
And there was no Dragons Den in 1980!!

Reusable candles, I hear there were quite a few power cuts/blackouts back then so they'd come in handy

I think you're missing the point.1980 was chosen as a random year.
This could be something that was invented last year.
The problem is you have to manufacture and market the already invented invention.

Rubiks cube. I would hawk it around Hamleys and other toy shops. Marketing costs would be financed by a £1000 bet on West Ham to win the cup final 1-0 with a headed goal by Trevor Brooking.

Easy. The sling swimsuit (which then spawned the mankini but I'd ignore that).
Would have went down a treat in the 80s and made me not only a fortune but a hero to all hetro males.

The Rubik Cube was invented in the 70s.

Nope, 1980 not too bad. The miners strike was 1978 then relative peace (and plenty of electricity) until 1984.
I'm sure I'll get the prize, do you know what it is?

Fairbet. A bet matching service conducted by telephone / post / shop notice boards. Liquidity and in-play markets would be problematic to start with but I would hope for a breakthrough in inter-network communications to improve things.

I would invent a subscription based movie rental company, pay 10 pound get as many movies shipped to your house as you want. I would offer to sell my venture to blockbuster video for 1 million dollars and they would refuse. Then I could laugh at them as they go out of business and my company becomes worth billions....

I think I would call it Getflix.
