Don't know how I never heard this until renewing on Monday!

No tax disc to be displayed since October. How pleased was I to bin this ugliness for ever.

Only thing I see is that it makes it much easier for offenders to avoid paying, knowing that there is no visual check save for random
checks of the vehicle by the registration number.

I guess that DVLA will know whether it is renewed or SORN and pursue culprits that way.

I'd guess that your registration is read by many fixed cameras these days. They widened the M25 junction 25-27 recently. As part of this, they have put in speed cameras. I expect that there are cameras that read your registration there as well.

The law changed 'having no tax' to a criminal act years ago.

It used to be a civil case heard in a County Court, and your local council were the prosecutors, when they could be bothered.

Aunty... Have you got any photos of your cars which you could share with us to give us a better idea of how much better they will look without the ugly monstrosity of a tax disc clogging up the windscreen? Mischief

tax discs are fine looking -  it's the reg plates that need beautifying ,ugly Upper case lettering .

- always thought the Germans and Irish  had the best looking number plates

I'd buy a tax disc.

Totally correct about the reg plates. They are hideous!

So many cars are ruined because the weren't designed to accommodate a large plate.

I bought a short number for my RX8 as a long one just wrecked the front styling.

Notice with "Alfas" how they put them to one side so as not to obliterate the grille.

And YELLOW for the rear plate....how sh!te is that?

I taxed a car online recently.
It took me all of two minutes.

Compare that with years ago when you had to stand in long a queue at the post office with all the documents required.

Agree that with no visual check it makes it easier to get away with not taxing your car.

Suppose a reduction due to the removal of the expensive to issue paper version is not on the cards. Sad
Report elise November 26, 2014 12:01 PM GMT
a lot of people seem to have missed the real con in this changeover

apart from the saving they now make in printing and posting discs, the other money spinner is the fact that when you sell a car the tax is immediately cancelled and you get a refund for the remaining months not including the current one, however the new buyer has to tax the car for the month you are in, thus taxing the same car twice for one month

Add £15 to the sale price.

Sorted.
Report Foinavon November 26, 2014 10:53 PM GMT
It's time they scrapped car tax altogether. Basing the cost on CO2 emissions is a nonsense as those who generate the most carbon dioxide already pay proportionately more tax when they buy fuel.

...and those pesky foreign plate vehicles would pay their share
Report call me a taxi November 26, 2014 11:42 PM GMT
The idea was mooted years ago by driving magazines was to scrap the tax put 1p on a gallon.

The more mileage you did, the more you paid.
Report Foinavon November 27, 2014 12:29 AM GMT
Sensible idea.
When you fill up you are buying energy. The tax paid should reflect the difference of 11% in calorific value between a litre of petrol and a litre of diesel (due to the higher specific gravity of diesel) in order to give a level playing field.
At present fuel duty is the same for both, VAT being slightly higher on diesel because of the small price differential charged by the suppliers.

Clouseau...I also hate dealer stickers in cars.

Why do people drive around for years advertising a dealer f.o.c.

Have to wonder how big a sticker would have to be before it was removed.
Report Stow_judge December 4, 2014 10:27 AM GMT
A car tax placed on fuel would be a tax on business (Lorries/Vans) and would lead to higher prices of goods in shops.
Report Dr Crippen December 4, 2014 10:27 AM GMT

That is simply disgusting.
It should be challenged in the courts.

What about all foreign lorries driving on our roads.

We go abroad, we pay tolls.

Should charge them a fee as they get on and off ferries.

Back on topic, it's nine days since I renewed and, whilst a disc used to arrive in a couple of days,
I still have no confirmation of the transaction.

Went back and tried to pretend to order it again, so now I have a response confirming the purchase.

Is it normal not to confirm, or is it just slower?
Report trebor December 4, 2014 11:26 AM GMT

Yes Jack, and when I pretended to buy it again, the confirmation was right there, so I just saved it.

What about all foreign lorries driving on our roads.

UKIP are proposing all foreign vehicles will have to purchase a Britdisc before entry into the UK, the money will go to the upkeep of the roads and any lost fuel duty.
