In 2009 i remember Hamilton getting disproportionately more coverage than Button despite Button winning the title.  I think this was because the general view was, rightly imo, that Lewis was a better driver.  Hamilton isnt actually that popular because of his tax status and the fact that he just isnt very interesting.  SH just digging his heels in or being controversial for the sake of it.

No it's not stupid, there are many people that dislike him because he is black, that's not an opinion it's fact, people come up with all sorts of pathetic reasons to dislike him including living in moanco and not paying tax, where button also lives.

Felt the same but its the fact he said he left because he couldn't walk down the street in the UK   without being recognised & that was the main reason for going, a most infuriating comment, cannot really blame him trying to avoid a hefty tax bill but at least admit it

As relayed in the comments section it's more to do with the nature of his sport and probably his blandness. As much as the BBC like to cream themselves it's not liked by a vast number.
Makes me think of Carl Fogarty. In Germany where his sport is far more mainstream he was a hero, even though he was English. Over here he wasn't nearly as popular.

Just imagine how much more popular Nelson Mandela would've been if he'd been white.
