Obviously not everyone, but let's be honest, most people would have preferred the other Briton, people don;t have a habit of admitting they are racist so you have to read between the lines, I don;t know you so what do I know, but if you think everyone that dislikes hamilton is because of his personality than imo you are mistaken,
Report Mikael D'Haguenet November 23, 2014 6:09 PM GMT
It was a stupid thing to say, SH, even if there will be inevitably those who don't like him purely because of his (mixzed) race.

That said, I've never warmed to Tiger Woods either!
Report Mikael D'Haguenet November 23, 2014 6:10 PM GMT
Mixzed = patois.
Report rob_dylan November 23, 2014 6:13 PM GMT
In 2009 i remember Hamilton getting disproportionately more coverage than Button despite Button winning the title.  I think this was because the general view was, rightly imo, that Lewis was a better driver.  Hamilton isnt actually that popular because of his tax status and the fact that he just isnt very interesting.  SH just digging his heels in or being controversial for the sake of it.
Report scandanavian_haven November 23, 2014 6:15 PM GMT
No it's not stupid, there are many people that dislike him because he is black, that's not an opinion it's fact, people come up with all sorts of pathetic reasons to dislike him including living in moanco and not paying tax, where button also lives.

Burton, what about button he lives in a tax haven?

It just seems like pure jealousy to me, if you earned 20 million a year, why would you want  almost half of that to be taken away so it can be spunked and frittered away b a government that he probably didnn;t vote for on a stupid unwinnable war they again he never voted for, and more to the point, if you were young, rich and successful, why in the world would you stay in a cold, grey skied country that pisses down most of the year? when you can live it up in monte carlo? This is the last country in the world Id want to pay tax to too, given how much it wastes and gives away in foreign aid to corrupt governments.

Perhaps Button is a more likeable character.

The audio when he was going "Nico hit me, Nico hit me" like a three year old who was grassing up his big sister is one of the funniest clips this year. Summed him up, never his fault when anything went wrong although he did ease up on blaming the team a bit towards the end of the season... when he started winning surprisingly.

Report mad mad moon November 24, 2014 7:53 PM GMT
There were so many holes in that article it was laughable.
There's a lot of luck involved in winning SPOTY, summed up by the fact that the very popular World Champion Frank Bruno never won it,
and the far less popular World Champion Lennox Lewis did.

There must be thousands earning good money from the race card industry.

that Guardian article is really daft. That journo must exist in a state of permanent heightened paranoia.

As relayed in the comments section it's more to do with the nature of his sport and probably his blandness. As much as the BBC like to cream themselves it's not liked by a vast number.
Makes me think of Carl Fogarty. In Germany where his sport is far more mainstream he was a hero, even though he was English. Over here he wasn't nearly as popular.

Just imagine how much more popular Nelson Mandela would've been if he'd been white.  Cry
