That was terrific , always liked a good ghost story.

...and an under-lit, 'explore-every-cliche', dialogue-lite one too

^ but it succeeded in creating a very frightening atmosphere.

next week he goes on a cycling tour of Cornwall ... and faces a German firing squad.

Scare stories are about subverting expectations and taking you from comfort to disquiet.

This tried too hard to be atmospheric and to be a ghost story, from the get-go for me

Great series so far. I live in Scarborough and it's weird seeing some of these landmarks in such a scary and creepy setting

This was about our fifth stay at the grand for the themed weekends ,over the years we have seen the place go down the nick ,run by bits of scruffy kids that have no idea what smart appearance means ,the food was terrible in the premier bit, a bit better in the harbour lights [no its not all cooked in the same kitchens ?] the room we stay in are premier but believe you me there is nothing premier about them at all ANY one who say this place is clean tidy good food need glasses /taste buds ,attention ,or just live in cloud cookoo land ,worn carpets dirty bathrooms with black mould in the tiles not nice to look at, this premier room we had this time was the smallest the dirtiest yet , down in the bowels with no lift ,pay for a sea view you cant see through they are that filthy ,you need them cleaning ,cant open windows or shut them stuck with paint ete
this is not a vey good place to stay any more I could go on but it would become a war and piece epic years of neglect has taken its toll NO maintenance .....NO excuses .....

Stayed November 2014, travelled as a couple

Scudding clouds across a brooding moorland

Cut to ill-lit room where suddenly, nothing happens!

Work in dripping taps and general watery, well they might be metaphors but then again this mini-series is so far up it's own backside, they might be a miner with a Davy Lamp trying to avoid the clichés, whilst searching for some plausibility.

....and cut to scudding clouds across a brooding moorland.

A scary tale, well told; some of the things make the hair stand up on the back of the neck  - the dirty windows, painted shut, black mould in the tiles and the terrible food and worn carpets. Puts me off ever staying there.

So, Michael Palin accepted the part after reading just the first episode

I thought the first two parts were better but on the whole that was an excellent three part drama.

Mrs Gupta died 3 years ago....but she's still a damn fine cleaner !

To put your mind at rest, MD,  I have never had a cleaner called Mrs Gupta,

Disappointing last episode. To be honest, first episode was quite effective, but went downhill after that. Shame really, 'cause it showed promise.

Caught up with episode 3 today as I was watching the Juddernaut's epic comeback at the time, but thoroughly enjoyed that series, well done Beeb

If you enjoy being scared I can recommend the film 'Sinister', it was on C4 last night at 10.00pm.
