I laughed when I saw the thread title.
The 'Dr John' known to hundreds of residents of Custom House and Canning Town (Newham) back in the 1960s and 70s was a Scottish G.P. with what was considered by many to be an unpronounceable surname, hence 'Dr John'. His surgery was in Murray Square, E.16. He wasn't my G.P, I don't know his surname. He wore spectacles with no lens in them and if you got him a bottle of whisky, you got a sick note for up to 3 months for the local D.H.S.S. office in Plaistow. I knew 3 men, two are dead now, one of a heart attack, the other murdered, who each had a 'bad back', and were 'unable to work' for years. It didn't stop them running a scrap metal business though. ![]() On a more serious note, he told my aunt to 'Take your daughter home as she only has a cold.' A few days later she was in an oxygen tent with double pneumonia. My uncle got really angry at this, marched into the surgery and hit Dr John, breaking his nose. He got nicked for it. |
