Is it a form of madness?
A friend of mine is using a credit card to buy his girlfriend a diamond ring and he's going to pay the ridiculous retail price of £5,995.00. God knows its actual value, I'd guess around two to three grand. I realise it's a gift and a token of his love and all that bóllocks but he most certainly cannot afford it in his financial position. He desperately needs a new car for a start. I reckon he's being taken for a prize mug, they've only been together six months or so at most.
I've tried to persuade him otherwise, or at least to buy at auction to avoid the jeweller's massive mark up, but she won't budge from this particular ring in the high street.

Yes, but so is love. Come to think of it, so is buying a car in a lot of places, as it is cheaper to mix buses and taxis.

If your friend lives in the middle of nowhere, then maybe a trip for them both to London to walk down Hatton Garden, say, because window shopping amongst literally thousands of rings in shop windows might make buying the £5,995 one seem a bit less urgent -- the world is not about to run out of diamond rings, so they can afford to wait. I expect that on Youtube there will be any number of guides to buying diamonds and what to look for (the 4 or 5 Cs) so they can be educated consumers.

Strange thing if somebody gave me a bag with 10 rings in value from £1 to £50000 and I could have any for £150 I would not be able to choose the valuable one.Consequently you have to trust the seller but the mark up is astronomical

She must be the ride of a lifetime to get a 6K rock after only 6 months, no other explanation for it. A general rule of thumb is that as soon as you walk out of the shop it's worth about 30% of the sale price.

He's putting it on a credit card which probably means the ring will end up costing him ten grand after he's paid all the interest off!
at worst tell her his credit card carnt take a £6k hit.

Putting 6 grand on a credit card when he works in a kitchen is complete and utter insanity. I wouldn't do that for letitia Dean let alone Anna Kournikova.

Bit unfair to blame the young girl here without knowing the full details. So the girl knows her boyfriend has not much money and is insisting on a ring costing £6,000? More likely the boyfriend has been acting the bigshot and insisted he gets this particular ring for her.

if she's really after the cash, she'd surely want an antique or something at auction that will return more than a third of the asking price.

It depends. She might think working in a kitchen means he is only a pound behind Gordon Ramsay. And he might have encouraged that misapprehension in return for her sampling his sausage roll.

Tell him to get his head OUT of his arse and take his place in the real world. True love does not need to be proved! One, or both, of them is totally out of touch with reality. There is no happiness to be gained from this venture, only misery and long-term debt.
