This won't mean much to most on here, but the leisure centre was demolished, following a fire two or three years ago.
That was a fantastic facility and a great shame it was lost.
But wait..... out of the ashes springs the new "Selby Leisure Centre" which is only just over half the size as was.
In a competition to pick a new name, the winner chose "Selby Leisure Centre" and to reward his genius he gets a one year membership to the gym

As to where it is I am at a loss, but also pretty cross that my name "The Crappy Architecture Half Size Leisure Centre" wasn't chosen! |

Never heard the alleged "Broad Yorkshire Accent" in this area, as it's West Yorkshire/South Yorkshire thing. Having said that there were a fair number of miners that moved to the area, to work in the then lucrative Selby Coal Fields". At it's thickest (and indeed they are) in the old mining communities where most would struggle to understand them! An example as said to me was "Nay cocker, ar lass is painting't roof ot 'ouse". In these parts the accent is closer to East Yorkshire and can still be aggravating....for instance "Can I have your phurn number" and "Can you give me the curd" or things like "We're going for a drarv to get some new caretains". Most annoying when booking a GP appointment is understanding the given times, as 30 & 40 sound exactly the same as in "Three ferty farv". |

At least they had a reason for demolishing it. The local council here demolished our one then came to the realisation that they didn't have money to build the new one
