Dozens of pigs died or had to be put down after a lorry transporting the animals overturned during a road crash in North Yorkshire.

The lorry was carrying 200 pigs when it was in collision with another lorry and a car at 10:20 GMT.

A number of pigs escaped on to the road after the crash on the A59 Roman Road, near Upper Poppleton, police said.

Thirty-five of the animals either died in the accident or had to be put down by vets, police said.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "There were 200 pigs in the lorry which overturned and sadly 35 of them died or were euthanised.

"Two vets attended the incident along with the RSPCA, who oversaw the animals' welfare."

The A59 Boroughbridge Road was closed for some time while emergency services dealt with the scene and the highway was cleared.

Sickening really, but I'll still be eating part of one later. I wish I wasn't such a f*cking hypocrite!

Fair enough if they're  reared in the UK. Others aren't so lucky.

I stopped eating meat after seeing a lorry with pigs on it all crammed. I thought poor sods and I've not had any meat since.

slaughtering depots need to be nearer the farms imo ,a few round this way have closed over the years -and this is a major area  -  they shouldnt be subject to needless suffering otherwise esp  on long  journeys .very stressful  Sad

Has to be said conditions at least in the UK seem a lot better than the old days  -  all the ones round here have space, natural daylight and mud pools  as well as housing from the elements  .  far cry from the horrible concrete units and shackles employed only 20 years ago

Yes they seem to be Coach'. The dreadful sow stalls were banned some time ago, although some EU countries are flouting the law which resulted in the ban on stalls. So nobody (who cares about animal welfare) should buy bacon marked from EU countries imo.

They can't all be that bad kenny?
Report kenny mann November 8, 2014 7:10 PM GMT
No they're not. I think around 5 of the 30 or so were still using stalls. I'll try and find out which ones still have a black mark against them.

You get what you pay for with bacon (and most meats). If you can afford it you will taste the difference, I can't always but when I do, It makes for a better sarnie!

True. Most people couldn't care less where their meat's from, or how it has been treated  unfortunately.

Ziff Meats was the name of a slaughterhouse in what was Beckton Road in Newham up to the late 1970s. Next door to it was Henson and Burbridge, who were meat processors.

The stench was facking awful, and if the wind was westward, it carried the smell 200 yards to to the housing estate where I lived as a kid.

In the height of summer you'd never seen so many houses with all the windows closed.

All the staff were Jamaicans and used to bet in our shop, and we had to spray the whole shop with air freshener after they went back to work after their dinner break.

To this day I still have no idea where the nearest cattle farm was.

There was a pig farm in East Ham Manor Way, but the abattoir only did cattle.

By and large cheap meat is a false economy.  Just eat less of it less often.   At the end of the day you are putting it in your body...
Report Coachbuster November 9, 2014 8:50 PM GMT
rob - don't you realise you need meat to survive .

any meat - Iceland supreme value burgers will do - it's important or we could all waste away Shocked  - be careful about telling folk to eat meat less often

5x times a day is the minimum required in the UK  ,something to do with Vitamin D and bone  loss  Crazy

vegetarians dont seem to unhealthy for me.  Nor do they die younger.
Report Coachbuster November 9, 2014 9:28 PM GMT
i think it must be the same either way - if there is a difference it's because veggies may take greater overall care of themselves - dunno .

i still say genetics is the biggest overall precursor unless you're a herion addict or something
