Velasquez, I reckon you know that Foinavon is a mountain up North which is often shrouded in Scotch mist. A nearby mountain, Arkle, used to post on here many moons ago. It's possible that someone may have...nah shirley not.

Foinavon, I have a painter friend up Sutherland way and I had the chance to go there some years back, but I don't really like travelling. I've seen the landscape on the telly - looks spectacular, especially in the winter.

Unfortunately I've never been there but intend doing so some day. I've seen photographs and it really does look awesome.

A regular punter of mine had Soba for the Stewards Cup as the final leg of a £40 treble.
He had Italy to win the WC at a massive price, poss 40s, after they had drawn their first 2 group matches.
Can't remember the third selection but Soba was a massive doubt (injured in training I think) and the punter was never off the phone to the stables begging them to run the horse.

The Mighty Mac was a wonderful front-running Michael Dickinson-trained 2 1/2-mile chaser of the early 1980s.

One of the best jumpers of a fence I've seen. Not just spectacular, but fast and efficient too.

Actually, thinking about it, Michael's mother Monica might have held the licence by the time The Mighty Mac won the Cathcart. Would have to get up to find the Form Book, so will look it up when I need a cup of tea.

I just avoided Piggott as a jockey. I backed Cutting Blade for the Coventry when he was a trainer for a short-lived period...I've been told a thousand times how my Grandad (a Rangers fan ) backed Never Say Die at 100/1 for the Derby, and he did the double with a French filly for the Oaks -- but Fluorescence (or Fluorescent) -- was scratched just before the Oaks.

There's a terrific book out just now about Never Say Die, linking the horse to the Beatles - Pete Best's mother won a lot on money on Never Say Die and bought a large house, enabling the Beatles to practice...Singer sewing machine millionaire owned Never Say Die...a terrific book.

I think Never Say Die was the first American bred to win the Derby...? He ushered in a new era...

Velasquez - Did you know that Robert Sterling Clark, owner of Singer as you mentioned, was also a huge art collector, particularly of Renoir but also others great artists including Goya and of course Degas (famous for his racehorse paintings) but sadly not Gradl.

Clark and his wife set up the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Mass. in 1955. Google the museum for more info.

Really? I read the book about 4 months ago, Mac...requested it from the local library...I'll have to read it again. It's a strange book as it covers all this different ground. Men wouldn't let sewing machines into their houses as they thought it would be too dangerous for women. There was stuff about patents and fortunes being won and lost.

I think Clark might have owned the building (at one time) where John Lennon died? Not sure about this...but Pete Best wrote the foreword for the book - his mother even pawned her jewellery to back Never Say Die - she went "all-in". It's an odd book as the author makes all these strange connections.

I used to be a removal man - I hated the fookers with a vengeance. The old Singer sewing machines were murder to take down stairs and 8 out of 10 tenements seemed to have them in the 80s...and by then, they were just about worthless...had to wear feckin' shin pads...

We used to dump them by the ton - and I mean that literally...the old oak ones and mahogany ones with the fancy iron sides...sometimes people hid money in them...sometimes, we used to rip out the sewing machines to make them lighter...it was acceptable in the 80s...

Another thing we used to dump was Lloyd Loom chairs - worth a few bob now...and some real crap, like Utility furniture...and sort of blonde-walnut fitted bedroom suites...and Bex Bissell carpet sweepers ...and tea chests full of books ...and Burco boilers that you could use to cook whelks ...
