I cannot remember his name.
A good jump jockey, Irish, rode in (in the UK mostly, I think) the 80's and 90's. Had a bad fall and head injuries, was a course correspondent for the racing channel (pre ATR).
Anyone know who I'm thinking of?

He only got on Arcot at Haydock because Graham McCourt was suspended and suffered a brutal fall. He was a very decent jockey.

THE 1994 Swinton Hurdle at Hay dock will be remembered for the race that effectively ended the riding career of Declan Murphy. Though he made a remarkable recovery for a brief return to the saddle, he hung up his boots for good the following year to work in the media. Murphy was aboard Jeremy Glover's Arcot when the favourite took a crashing fall at the final flight. The gelding was killed in the incident and Murphy was rushed to Walton Hospital in Liverpool for life-saving brain surgery. But, despite multiple injuries including a skull fractured in eight places, he came back to ride for a short spell before calling it a day. Murphy was still among the unpaid ranks when booting home his first winner on Prom at Tralee in 1983 but, soon after turning professional, the big-race victories started rolling in. Among them were two Irish Champion Hurdles on Kings mill (1989) and Royal Derbi (1993) and the 1992 H & T Walker Gold Cup on Deep Sensation and the same year's Scilly Isles Chase on Bradbury Star. He also won the 1991 Bula Hurdle on Royal Derbi but he has particularly fond memories of 1993 Champion Chaser Deep Sensation. Murphy said: ''He was a joy to ride and we had some great battles with Viking Flagship. It's a shame they both arrived in the same era. ''We also won the Mumm Melling Chase together but it was Richard Rowe who rode him when he won the Tote Gold Trophy in 1990. Along with Royal Derbi, I was sorry to see he passed away recently.'' Murphy rode as first jockey to Josh Gifford and the pair enjoyed plenty of success, notably with Bradbury Star and Deep Sensation. He added: ''Josh was one of my boyhood heroes and it was the realisation of a dream to ride for him. We had some great times.'' Murphy was in the headlines again recently when the victim of an armed robbery at his house near New market and, just last week in London, when held at gun point in an at temped car-jacking. Another stroke of fortune was that half the field missed the break, including the runner-up. It was the race which finished the country's best bookmaker Stephen Little. The race, and the refusal of the authorities to take any action about it, made him realize there was no future in trying to make a genuine book on British horse racing. The race summed up everything about Declan Murphy's career and the contempt in which he held the sport. |

Details of the extent of Brian Wright's racing network emerged at a related trial at Woolwich Crown Court that lasted 14 months. The fugitive's son, Brian Wright junior, one of seven men in the dock, was jailed for 16 years for conspiracy to import and supply cocaine.

comeback wins for jockeys who have been injured are not uncommon; I remember one time when frankie came back after a long injury spell, he won on his first ride back in a nursery on the july course iirc, can't remember the horse's name but I remember thinking at the time it looked like it had been set up for him but did have the biottle to back it...
the murphy incident was particularly disgusting though, especially as he was such a good horseman |

Inquiry takes the shine off Dobbin's day

McAlister, on 5-1 shot Lord Samposin, failed to prevent a winning send-off for Dobbin, who was partnering the 4-11 favourite Ballyvoge. McAlister's mount, the only threat to the sixth most successful jockey to ride in Britain earning a 1,164th win, dropped his reins twice in the closing stages of the two-and-a-half mile novices' chase. The rider, who has only ridden two winners this season, also switched his whip twice for no apparent reason in the last 75 yards. The winning distance was three-quarters of a length.
