Blimey, seemed a nice down to earth chap in interviews. He was known as Shane Fenton in the early days.  RIP

Liza Goddard was indeed the girl who starred in  Skippy the Bush Kangaroo series.

I knew he was Shane Fenton, but didn't know any of this...

In the early 1960s, "Shane Fenton and the Fentones" were an unknown teenage band who recorded a demo tape and mailed it in to a BBC programme with the hope of being picked to appear on television. While awaiting a reply from the BBC, the band's 17-year-old singer Shane Fenton died as a result of the rheumatic fever he had suffered in childhood.

The rest of the band (guitarists Jerry Wilcox and Mick Eyre, bassist William "Bonny" Oliver and drummer Tony Hinchcliffe) decided to break up, but then unexpectedly received a letter from the BBC inviting them to come to London to audition in person for the programme. Fenton's mother asked the band to stay together, and to keep its name, in honour of her son's memory. Jewry, who was a roadie with the group at the time, was asked to become the new Shane Fenton.

Sad news, another one gone.  Before he became Alvin Stardust - in the 60's he was Shane Fenton with his backing group The Fentones. But he was not the original Shane Fenton.

The original group posted a demo tape of their music to the BBC with the hope that it would be picked up by a producer and that they could appear on a music show.

However, as they awaited a reply from the broadcaster, Shane Fenton, the band’s lead singer, died of rheumatic fever.

The band broke up, then unexpectedly received the letter they had been waiting for from the BBC asking them to come to London and audition for the programme in person.

Alvin Stardust (then Jewry) was a roadie for the group and was asked to become the new 'Shane Fenton'.  And years later in the Glam Rock period he became Alvin Stardust.

I still remember that he played the pub landlord in The Grimleys. Noddy Holder was in it as well, great show.

Not to be forgotten is that he was a great help in assisting the children across the road.

Alvin lived a mile away from me in a village in West Sussex.
Knew him well a very sad loss to the local community.
RIP. You will be sadly missed by many fans and friends.

yes RIP  Alvin Stardust  - groovy fella and a good guy by all accounts  -  was still going strong last year

he played a set with his wife at a local day centre in front of about 20 h"cap people,i thought that was very good of them as most wouldnt have been ar$ed

It's funny how you see people at a point in time. I always associated Alvin Stardust with Gary Glitter in the 70s.

Shows how wrong you can be. Alvin seems to have been a nice guy.
