I like to think I'm half decent and have sussed out the techniques.

In the Telegraph, they have four levels: Gentle, Moderate, Tough, Diabolical.  99% of the time I can complete G, M & T but quite often cannot crack D.

A while back, I did some google research and read that with some of the most difficult puzzles you may be able to only narrow down certain squares to one of two numbers and that effectively, you have to guess.

Is that right? Surely not.

why not?

You're not really using your brain if you guess. Anyone could complete any sudoku puzzle if they used a 'trial and error' method.

The one in the Big Issue always seems to be the most difficult I encounter. Times and Telegraph no problem.

Telegraph during the week is usually a 'Moderate' iirc.

I only buy it on a Saturday now. On the last Saturday of each month they hve a selection of puzzles including some Tough and Diabolical.

CMAT - don't know if they are online but if I can find a case in point, I'll put it up here.

I'd be very surprised if the only way of solving any was through guessing, though I've certainly tried a few when I felt this was the case

You should not have to guess. You might be left with two possibilities for a number and have to work both options through.

With all sudoku puzzles it's a process of elimination.  With the easier puzzles the process is easy to follow without jotting down the possibilities.
More difficult puzzles leave options towards the end but it's still a process of elimination - just more difficult (obviously).
In the early days of sudokus I developed a sudoku puzzle solver (pencil and paper thing) and was going to sell it on the internet (world population 7 billion, say 5% take up rate at 10p would make me rich (less 5% Betfair commission, of course)).  Then my daughter tells me that it had already been invented, so I stopped.
But I'm not sure it has - and me and Betfair would be richer than our wildest dreams.
