We had a boy named Ralph in junior school (1959-63)
We called him Ralph, so did our teachers.
Were we wrong, because they seem to pronounce it 'Rafe' these days?

Teachers in those days had carte blanche to do what they wanted Dr.C. One was going to give me a dry shave with a cut throat razor in front of the entire class because I never had time to shave most mornings. I said that's not going to happen Sir (he was an ex RAF officer and old school). Fair play, he pulled out a cut throat and called my bluff. I disappeared at mid morning break and went home to get rid of my whiskers. I always respected him as did everyone else.

We had one. We pronounced his name as 'Rarf' (as in half). I believe some pronounce it 'Ralf'.

My brother had a friend named Ralph and there was someone at my senior school named Ralph (although I didn't know him personally).
Both were called 'Ralf' - as they always should be. 'Rafe' is for affected nancy boys. |

Only posh twats call it Rafe. Quite like Ralph pronounced correctly but the only one I ever knew had it as his surname. We liked him though as he was smashing an absolute milf at the tennis club.
We were thinking about calling our recently born kid Ralph if it was a boy, but because back in the day we used to call being sick "ralfing" we cancelled that in case the term was widespread and still in operation and had Hector lined up instead. Kid is probably quite lucky it dropped out as a girl. |

I always thought Rafe was a completely different name !
There was a partner called Rafe when I worked for a firm in Berkeley Square. When I was in the first form there was a friend called Ralph whose name appeared on some albums later as the sound engineer. |
