darts , saw them at the lesser free trade hall . july 1976. first on . 2nd were slaughter and the dogs , bill toppers sex pistols . a quid to get in . pete shelley played with a twenty quid woolworths guitar that he sawed the top off to make it look 'individual ' .great days .

Music journalist David Nolan now claims to have uncovered the true story about this iconic event - and the follow-up gig six weeks later - in his new book 'I Swear I Was There: The Gig That Changed The World'.

David spoke to us this week:

So the numbers are pretty hazy...

"Yeah, it’s funny because I think you can get 150 people in the Lesser Free Trade Hall and by my reckoning seven and a half thousand were there supposedly so something must have gone awry with the ticketing, apparently!"

How many people were there?

"There were about 35-40 people there at the time."

So who was there?

"We know that Morrissey was there, who went on to form the Smiths. We know that the lads who went on to form the Buzzcocks were there because they organised the gig. We know that two lads from Lower Broughton were there who went out the next day and bought guitars at Mazel Radio which used to be on Piccadilly Station Approach, they formed a band called Joy Division; We know that Mark E Smith was there who went on to form The Fall; we know that Paul Morley was there who went on to become a writer and wrote about the scene for the NME etc.

"There was ANOTHER gig six weeks later there that was actually full, and that’s where the Hacienda came from, that’s where Factory Records came from. So it’s a very easy thing to put your finger on and say: yeah, that’s where everything kind of changed. As a result, it’s become such an attractive thing that lot’s of people have said: I was there.. and maybe they weren’t."

darts ...people get mixed up . the gig you are thinking about was in june '76 , when my friends went but i was on holiday with my parents ( i was 15 !!!) . the buzzcocks were in the 70/80 crowd that evening as curious as many , like others  . the lesser famous gig i went to , there were probably 300/400 there . news in the north had spread quickly about punk . however , from my night i remember a young lad in a leather jacket and long hair fighting at the front of stage . his surname was morrissey apparently .

just seen screaming post . quite right . funny , i remember another gig much clearer . when the ramones played the legendary electric circus in mcr .1977 i think .  it was £ 1.50 to get in . talking heads were support ! i nicked the poster off the wall outside the venue afterwards . it was covered in paste having ben stuck to the wall. the front was fine though . it is framed in my hall now .

One of my favourite pubs in the area LAMBETH WALK. Do you know it has been closed for ages and will probably never reopen again? There was a boxing gym upstairs for years that two of my brothers trained at. It's very sad indeed that such a place has got the red card and will no doubt be turned into flats.

didnt know that slippy .... i went there alot in the 80.s ...so many pubs closed/closing in se london

LW, I went to a gig at the half moon pub in the 2000's...it is exactly that...a pub...nice back room and stage though! Opposite was/is a fancy looking party shop (i think) with wonderful decor. 9 sheets to the wind and crashed at a complete strangers house with whom we'd been drinking with all day. Knowing 2 members of The Alarm who were playing that night with different bands also helped.

Yeah me too, I was working in Herne Hill mid 80's for a couple of years so went there often as well. The Crown And Greyhound in Dulwich Village is closed as well They are building a hotel there, absolutely gutted about that as that is where i spent most of my youth.

Harriet Harman lives about 400 yards from The Half Moon pub, she is absolutely loaded so maybe she'll buy it and be a Herne Hill version of Paggy Mitchell. I was really pi$$ed off when it closed and when the Crown And Greyhound in the Village closed as well I was apoplectic with rage

Nope L.W., I have to walk to The Alleyne's Head with the dog for a livener, which we both hate or The Rosendale. To me they are not pubs, they have mumsnet meetings in The Rosendale ffs I'm not a happy bunny.
