New TV advice

I wouldn't get a 3D tv - everything I hear is that these are not taking off. BBC have already ditched 3D sport, Sky is following suit. This article may be worth a read for you, but really don't do it.

Certainly would recommend Samsung though - both mine are Samsung and I think they are great value. Can't fault either of them (main one plus smaller bedroom one. Would certainly look at Samsung again before I look elsewhere next time.

I agree with Roger , much better to get a Smart tv than 3d

Samsung have made the best tv's for a fair few years now so worth paying a bit extra for a nice one .

I'll wait till after christmas now though !

3D TV's were never going to take off. Who wants to watch TV wearing silly glasses.

Agree Samsung are the daddy when it comes to TV's.

We have a Samsung Smart/3d TV - never use any of the features, It's all on sky+ or the computer anyway and the 3d glasses are a bit cumbersome, well, at least you know you have them on.

What I'd suggest is something with a fast refresh rate.

Fast refresh rates aren't that important unless you're watching sport or playing games on the TV.  Above 60hz the TV will fill in frames and can even make the picture unnatural and blur as well.  Make a list of what you actually want on your TV, apps/internet? size? connectivity? etc and buy the best you can afford, TV's come stuffed with extra gimmicks nowadays, if you don't need them then buy a more expensive 'basic' TV, you normally get what you pay for, so the actual TV quality should be higher and your not paying for a load of guff you don't need.

What we found, ooO{Alpha, was that in order to get the best picture, size and stuff, it automatically came with the other unnecessary guff. Unless we got it wrong .
A samsung UE40 ES8000 It cost about £1000, about 18 months ago, so it's probably obsolete by now.

Bought a new Samsung (think 50 inch) smart, hd and 3d all in one about 6 months ago. Bought it solely for its looks. Now obsolete but it had legs on the end and a narrow glass look edge around it. Looks great whether its turned on or off.

Quality of picture is brilliant. Infact so good on hd it took me a while to get used to it. Think its something to do with refresh rate which you can change if you like. I was going to change it but then got used to it. It does not affect sports but other programmes on hd ( some more so than others ) have a picture quality that is so clear as to appear a lot different to what I was used to. Bit like watching a very high definition home made movie which I initially found suited some programmes more than others.

I recommend that you check out a site called Trusted Reviews. They have tests for many makes and models of various sizes and price. Make sure that you read the full tests on models you think might be suitable. There are three sections to each test.
Put some effort into making an expensive choice instead of jut lazily asking which telly has everybody else got!

Toshiba have a new state of the tv on sale,the picture is so sharp and realistic ,if you watch sky when man.utd play and sky use their behind the goal camera you have to duck when one of their strikers take a shot.

I bought a Toshiba 32 inch, 6 months ago for only £200, for all the talk on here of paying lots more for Samsung and other makes this reasonably priced telly has a picture quality it would be difficult to beat.

Maybe its true that most new tellies will give an excellent quality picture  and I'd think long and hard about paying potentially hundreds more for little or no improvement by investing in a premium model.

Of course 3D is not taking off !

Hey Naydan, I have indeed put some effort in trust me , then asked opinions of others. Thanks for your input about trusted reviews though.
