Injera the first punch knocked him out, why he felt he had to do that is beyond me.

I once pulled a bloke back, off the ball.  He turned round and hit me.  Then bought me a drink afterwards, gotta love rugby.  Might play a few games in nov and dec.

I don't think he made the showers Jayco after I had finished with him. Biting is a no no in my book. Thing is, when a second row picks on you, they forget where the hookers boot and their face is in a set scrum..

He lost the match for his team, no excuse at all. I played at school slippy, second row, hated those scrums, uncontested these days.

Yes indeed, uncontested scrums is a real bugbear of mine. My coach at school was the British Lions forward advisor, he taught me how to be a hooker.
Feeding into the second row really winds me up.

The days of Sean Fitzpatrick who was in my opinion the best hooker of all time are a distant memory to me. Just get three meatheads in the front row now is the go, in both codes. Sad

Hooking is an interesting position, Slippy.

I used to do quite a bit of under-age rugby coaching. In my first year, I was stunned to see a boy I coached at hooker go all the way and play for Ireland.  He was determined, correct shape and technically good. But he wouldn't have made his club side back row.

The conclusion I drew was that any young forward (around 6ft, plus or minus and mobile ) with real talent inevitably played back row for their club.  The competition to make it at back row at representative level was incredibly high. Meanwhile, frequently, average hookers were making the grade.  Not every year admittedly, but most years.

Having realised this, I converted quite a few back back rowers to the position, as early as possible, with representative success.

It sort of mirrors my playing experience.  I played with and against plenty of representative hookers, and mostly ended up thinking; he is not all that.  Including a British Lion or two.

It's a unique position, with unique skills and lads who choose it can have great rugby careers.

so it is easy to go a long way as a hooker because anyone who is any good will be put in a different position?  Lol. Wait til slippy hears of this.

That's a reasonable post Ozymandius and I'm not going to disagree with you entirely. Thing is, when I played the hooker was the key position in deciding the outcome of a game. I'd size up my opposition after the first scrum and would know whether he was talented or not or just some bod who was given the number 2 shirt. I never lost a feed against my put in from one year to the next, it was just something that did not happen.
Just think of how many hookers were captains of club and country, Sean Fitzpatrick and John Eales for example, two of the very best. If not captain then pack leader.

I'm very biased in that was the position I made my own but if you have a very rock solid pack, being a hooker is an easy ride and that's fair enough. I never really rated Brian Moore much but he had such a powerful scrum at Harlequins and England he was made to look better than he actually was.
