Cheap Pay as you go smartphones... Worth it?

Pretty much, get a cheap android one and get pedometer or something like that.

If you are looking for a cheap value for money smartphone, I can recommend a motorola moto g. I bought one a couple of months ago for £90 - they were being discounted as a newer 4g model was released.

The basic 4g version can be bought for around £130 but if you don't want 4g or the ability to put an SD card in it, you can get the older one for well under £100.

There are plenty of reviews around on the net. I previously had a Sony Xperia U and this knocks spots off of it.

By the way, if you see a deal for one that is locked to a specific provider, you can get it unlocked cheaply via E-Bay (cost me £1.60).

Samsung S3s are now about £160 SIM free so you can just put a Pay As You Go SIM in. I expect they have GPS. Also Iphone 4 are now about the same price second hand. The cost of new phones is only going up. The top spec iphone 6 is now over £600 SIM free. Ridiculous. Be careful buying phones on ebay as there are thousands  of nicked ones on there that will eventually get blocked in this country.

I got a Motorola one for seven fifty a month the contract in the end get more free calls and texts than I could use am using it for this message

Had a quick test of the runtastic app earlier couldn't buy a thing to attach it to my arm so doubt I will use it for my long run tomorrow

Can't you put it in your pocket? I quite like the strava app. Mainly for cycling but it has a running option. People enter routes on their website.  As you go on your run you may complete some of the segments others have completed. It then puts you in a leader board. I'm not bothered about getting to the top but it's a good way of measuring your progress.

Me too, nothing comes close to it for spec and price.

I just checked and mine is a moto e.  No idea what 4g is.  Hopefully moto e is ok.
