Was hoping the good people of Chit Chat could help out with a few good films.

Prefer Comedy/True Stories rather than War/Sci Fi , but all suggestions from any era, very welcome.

Thank you to those who take the time to reply Happy

Barry Lyndon and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford are the two best English language films I've seen recently.

There's a rare showing of Sam Rockwell in 'Moon' next week on the BBC
Highly rated directed by Bowie Jnr

But it's Sci-Fi

"Being There" is a bit of a masterpiece, Peter Sellar's last film and it's a favourite of mine. A very solid 9/10 job.

"Glengarry Glen Ross" An excellent cast and hardly ever gets a mention in top film lists but it's an absolute gem. 9/10 with the thumb.

I really liked watching that recent film called pride. I don't normally like british comedy films but that's a good one.

Stalker by Tarkovsky, best film I've seen in last few years, again bit sci fi/other world though

Glengarry Glemn Ross is excellent - if you enjoyed that Slippy, it would be worth giving Swimming with Sharks a go - another David Mamet adaptation

Un Prophet is in French but an excellent prison film

Have you seen a Wizard Of Oz?

“Transported to a surreal landscape, a young girl kills the first person she meets and then teams up with three strangers to kill again.”

Original version of The Producers with Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel, written by Mel Brooks.

Outrageously funny.

Gone Girl, saw it last week and am actually considering going to see it again - two and a half hours long but absolutely flew by, brilliant entertainment imo  Grin

Also downloaded Blood Ties last week and would recommend it, starring Clive Owen and Billy Crudup as two brothers, one a villain and the other a nypd cop - very good drama, 8/10 for me

For true story drama a British film recommended here is "Let Him Have It."

I have seen one film on current release, it is "Map To The Stars." Undoubtedly some brilliant observation in it but whether the fairytale has lasting power I don't know. It is of the genre of "The Player" and "Mullholland Drive," two films that sag before the test of time.
