i guess he realised that the world isn't all about gain and that people are people wherever you go.

It is not a question of what I would do or you would do. He had every right to make those choices if he so wished. Did he finish his job or was it temporary leave?
It doesn't really matter as long as he was there legally.

no, but I think a lot of these guys probably travelled when Syria was in the midst of an apparent Arab uprising, before the extremist factions properly took hold. I don't know what assurances or protection the aid workers had, but presumably dollar signs soon flashed in certain warring factions eyes, at the site of westerners.

Also, I suppose he might have been well rewarded for his efforts...I really have no idea. But volunteering for work is not necessarily the same as doing voluntary work.

It's all eyes on Turkey now. ISIS have travelled as far West as they can go, they won't attempt to get into Turkey. Wouldn't like to be those Kurds being sandwiched between ISIS and Turkey in a no man's land. Maybe the West will allow Turkey to invade Syria taking ISIS out with them? Either way ISIS are buggered so we can stop with the hyperbole about you UK based threats and every Muslim being a terrorist.

The way to fight ISIS, Boko Haram, al qaeda etc is too to go after their sponsor Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait. And to make friends with strong men in middle east instead of trying to remove them e.g Al Bashir, Saddam Hussein, Gaddafi.

These tough guys they did make sure they dealt serious and harshly to all muslim extremists. It is when west weaken them or remove them when all these trouble started.

"We" shouldn't be fighting in Kobane. The town is right on the border between Syria and Turkey, so one would have thought the Turks would have a direct interest in preventing the establishment of an ISIS protectorate there.

Sadly, their own narrow self-interest in not aligning with the Kurds protecting it and of course their historical embarrassment at the original reasons for its founding - it was first settled by Armenians fleeing the pogrom one is not allowed to call a pogrom - prevents them from taking a more proactive role in its defence.

It's a very difficult situation for Erdogan as it happens - Turkish public opinion would be ambivalent at best about him helping out the Kurds, and of course there is Turkey's own Islamic population to consider when taking up arms against this ISIS mob.

The Turks and Kurds have long fought each other since Ataturk stymied the Bitish plan to create an independent Kurdistan after the Great War by simply annexing the territory proposed for that country. The Kurds fought a long war against Turkey, in which tens of thousands of people were killed and millions displaced.

Ultimately, Turkey will be compelled to take up arms. They may prevaricate, but their own self-interest will make the decision for them.

I have no time for Islam EbulGery, at least not the Islam practised in much of the modern Islamic world. Sadly, the idea of Jihad espoused by Qtub seems to have won the day among Sunnis, which is why they pose such a clear and present danger to the peace of the world.

And in Iraq, we should be doing everything we can, including boots on the ground, to destroy as many of these ISIS loons as possible, and as quickly as possible. That is not possible in Syria however, as boots on the ground would constitute an invasion, which is illegal under International law.

Finally, it is not our job to police Turkey's borders, particularly given the advanced and modern weaponry and training of the Turkish Armed Forces. It is Turkey's job. As I said above, it may not be a job they savour, but it is nonetheless their job.

One would hope that they perform better than the Iraqi army did. They fled before IS forces and, the biggest sin of all, they didn't destroy their heavy weapons! They should never have been left in working condition.

The reason the heavy weapons were'nt destroyed is because most of the Iraqi army joined the 'enemy'..

The remaining Shia elements of the Iraq army are not standing against IS, that is the problem

cant see them ( kurds ) holding out on a reliance of air attacks alone. it seems they have a lack of heavy weapons and are asking

anyone who will listen for more arms. they seem to have been left out to dry, i just hope the air attacks hit their targets and

cause more damage than first thought...
