The show, a comedy aimed at primary school children, showed Nightingale rejecting four applications from Jamaican-born Seacole to join her nursing corps, saying it was only 'for British girls'

Seacole replied that her father was born in Scotland.

I don't quite understand this...but. Did Florence Nightingale ACTUALLY do that in real-life? If so, then it is simply an accurate portrayal. If not, then it could be said to be inaccurate.

CBBC 'Horrible Histories' branded racist by BBC Trust

except that it wasn't - what the BBC Trust actually said was that the show had misrepresented Florence Nightingale as a racist

there is a difference

A longish, but interesting read.

Well, bearing in mind the year of these events I can't see how Nightingale could possibly have been a 'racist'. I'd bet that the word or general idea of racism didn't even exist!

She may, or may not, have had attitudes or beliefs that might today be regarded as 'racist' but it would not have been racist then. It seems that she disapproved of the less medical approach of the Scottish women.
You couldn't blame Florence for not wanting a nurse who would not stick to hospital rules...whatever they may be.
It still happens today. The NHS are loathe to employ witch-doctor. Al\though they DO now employ maggots and leeches, so progress is being made. Mischief

It may not have been called racism, but it existed.

The Seacole campaign has not only changed her occupation, but her race. She was three-quarters white and proud of her ‘Scotch blood’ (p.1). She had nothing good to say about her African/Creole heritage, but made a point of distancing herself from the ‘lazy Creole’ image (p.2). Seacole refers to ‘Blacks’, ‘negroes’ and ‘nigggers’, throughout her memoir, but she never uses any such word for herself.

She employed a black maid and the above-mentioned ‘good for nothing black cooks’.

In her own words: ‘I am only a little brown – a few shades duskier than the brunettes whom you all admire so much.’ (p.4)

I can't see why either of them could be accused of racism. I have explained Nightingale's attitude and I think that Seacole would probably have good reason, in her own mind at least, for her observations. SHE knew!! Grin

Apart from a few other mugs on here, nobody listens to you.

The world has moved on and being stuck in the past, you find it hard to accept.

Admittedly, your dear sister was mugged by a beastly black fellow but that is no reason to abhor an entire race.

Anyway, your type are going the same way as the dinosaurs - and elderly lardy types like yourself even more rapidly.

@naydam -- Florence Nightingale was not even in the country when Mary Seacole was turned down.

Is there someone at the BBC trust who gets paid to log and publicise extremely tenuous racist/sexist/homophobic comments or scenes from tv, film or radio shows?
How sad!

We make a big mistake with History....when we judge it by our values NOW

One has to have a sense of the values of the time...to judge things accurately

Nobody in the past knows what values society will have in the future

Both women are rightly remembered for the good they did

a very silly sketch by the BBC
Report ebulGery October 1, 2014 8:22 PM BST
The sketch was supposed to represent racism, as we see it now

had little to do with the women concerned

should ot have used historical figures like this
Report ebulGery October 1, 2014 8:22 PM BST
not
Report ebulGery October 1, 2014 8:57 PM BST
The sketch did not happen, it was inaccurate

Florence Nightingale was the more important figure

But Mary Seacole did a lot of good work

They are both rightly remembered, it seems a pity people have used them in modern racial arguments

Read the article, which was written by a woman.

Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavell, who were far more famous and did more good, have smaller statues than Mary Seacole, whose figure can be seen from across the Thames.

If you read the whole article (too much for the trolls like Wesdag to read) she's a historian, who wants to know why Seacole seems to have taken over as the No.1 Crimean Nurse and gets all the billing these days.

As well as the BBC progamme being chronologically wrong, she sets the record straight.

Like most others, I had heard of Mary Seacole, but knew nothing else until I read the historians link this morning.

'We are all equal' say the luvvies, but she appeared to consider herself above blacks, which, as we know, is a very naughty thing to do.

Who will post first now of these two?

Facts - who thinks 13 sounds like 7 Laugh

or

Wesdag - who thinks my OP on the Tom and Jerry thread is racist)Laugh
